Summary: Only one person really knows House.
He’d watched House for years, known him before and after. Wilson knew how much House had changed, how his Vicodin dosage had more than doubled over the past five years. And after their fight when House had been conned into detoxing, Wilson could finally understand.
Yes, he took too much, and he could seem like he was abusing the meds unless you knew to check the time or could judge how bad it was. Not that House would ever tell him, oh no; Wilson had to rely on how well he knew House and read the little hints, the slightly harder lean, canting his body to the left. Stacy had mentioned she thought House was doing it to piss her off or make a point, and Wilson refrained from telling her that it was her fault he needed the pills to begin with, instead shrugging and moving on to the arguably safer subject of Mark.
Because it wasn’t just House’s leg slowly killing him since she’d come back. House would never admit it aloud, but what heart he had had slowly begun to heal, and she’d come back and trampled on it, splitting the old fissures wide open. He’d seen how House reacted when he learned Wilson was passing up monster trucks to have dinner with Stacy, picked up how much that had stung, and that was enough to make Wilson thank God that House didn’t have anyone new in his life. This would have been hell on anyone he cared about, and House would have just hurt himself more.
But then, that was the thing about House. He didn’t want anyone new, because he already relied on too much, and another person could break him.
