She washes her hair with expensive volumizing shampoo, then applies a conditioner guaranteed to make her hair sleek and smooth if only she leaves it in for five minutes. She has plenty of time; they’re not going anywhere. Her body wash is pear-scented and expensive, and she takes her time, letting the conditioner sit as she shaves. When she’s toweled off and her hair is damp instead of soaking, she uses lotion, pear like the body wash, smoothing it slowly into her skin. They probably won’t notice, but she likes the feel of soft sheets against her silky skin.

When Stacy goes back out to the bedroom, a satin robe loosely tied over a pair of black panties, she can’t help but smile. Greg and James are curled together, Greg’s arm wrapped protectively around James’ chest and holding him close. It’s oddly sweet after earlier, and she’s not going to interrupt just because she’s awake and they’re not.

She wants it to happen again, and she suspects they do, too. She decided that much in the shower, steam swirling around her. It’s hot, and she’s discovered an unexpected kink in how much she likes to watch. It probably won’t work with anyone else; Greg and James have some indefinable bond, understanding each other with glances and a few short words, and Stacy appreciates that. It’s not the same as she has with Greg, and she’s pretty sure James and Greg don’t love each other the same way as she and Greg do, but it’s good for them. As for her, she likes James well enough. They’re definitely friends, and could probably be more if they had time to spend together apart from Greg. But for the three of them to work in any way, Greg has to be in all of it. Everything revolves around him, even if he doesn’t mean it to.

Before she gets into bed on the free side, she drapes the sheet over them. They look peaceful in their sleep, and they fit together. Stacy isn’t going to try to break that, just mold it to fit what she has with Greg.

Five days later, James leaves for an oncology conference in Florida. The very next day, Greg’s leg seizes up on him, and three days after, he’s diagnosed his infarction and authorized the bypass surgery. Two more days down the road, and Greg is comatose, Stacy signing off on a surgery Greg doesn’t want. Another day, and James is back, shocked into silence by everything that’s happened in his absence.

And when Greg finally gets home and James very definitely moves into their living room, it’s not ruining what they have that Stacy worries about. Instead, she can see what she has with Greg crumbling before her eyes, the bricks dissolving one by one, and she can’t find anyone to blame but herself.
