So been thinking more on the tattoo idea, and this is what I've come up with further:

I think that I like the first one better than the second. I like the definition that the black/white triangles give to the rose, and feel that the octagon grounds the whole design. You don't want a floating picture, you want a strong, grounded, tattoo. Big difference.

And the black triangles look too much like a crucifix; you're not really a crucifix guy.
