Weepy yearning countesses we've heard many. How about an angry one? A countess devastated and raging at her husband's infidelity.

Refreshing! Good to know you don't need croony, sobby noises and exagerated notes to make an impact.

Wasn't quite taken by Dorothea Roschmann when I first came upon her Fiordiligi in the "flower power" prodection of Cosi fan tutte by the Berlin Staatsoper.

Maybe primarily because she didn't "look the part" (but who am I kidding when Caballe's my goddess?), or maybe I was thrown and distracted by the sets and costumes.

But she grows on you and yes, this performance is a revelation. And don't forget it's Harnoncourt at the podium so think of the inherent implicated challenges to the role...
