Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth

Dec 05, 2006 12:33

Today in my Environmental Science, we watched An Inconvenient Truth. I realize that when you start talking about the environment, you risk looking like a silly high school granola-and-hemp greenpeace kid, but this movie is really really powerful. To the point of almost feeling sick. Depressed. We have collectively fucked up really really bad ( Read more... )

Well ryan, where do we start?
We need corporate responsibility. I try to do things that are better for the environment but even if a bunch of individuals changed, without the corporations making a change in their agenda, we can't expect much improvement. If we were to stop greenhouse gas emissions cleaner water, stronger biodiversity and so on would all improve as well! Can you imagine!?

Being aware is step one. I always read and think about this stuff and I am just at such a loss of where to go from there.

Its unbelievable how over looked this sort of stuff is.

I want to see this movie but I am afraid it will make me feel more helpless.

i like this entry though ryan. I wish i was an environmental crusader.

Yeah, it definitely does make you feel kind of helpless.

They show simulations of how water levels would change if the Arctic, Antarctic or Greenland were to melt. It's like Katrina level destruction - everywhere.

Gore is actually a smart guy. I like that he did this when he wasn't running for office or anything meaning he's doing this without a political agenda.

This is what I learn about every week in my Global Change Ecology class and usually the end result of our discussion is that we can't do anything except move northward and watch plants and animals and people die.
It makes me want to kill myself/not have children.

Have you heard of that dude's plan to stop global warming by setting a bunch of spacecraft out to form a cylinder around Earth to shade out the sunlight? They would adjust with the Earth's movement and seasons and stuff. It sounds nuts and would cost hundreds of trillions of dollars, but I like it. I'm sure it will never happen thoughhh

I still haven't seen An Inconvenient Truth, but I read Al Gore's big essay in the "green issue" of Vanity Fair earlier this year. That whole issue had a lotttt of those scary-type pictures.
