I found the movie today both intriguing and confusing. Some questions are still in my mind as to the plot line of the movie. I was wondering as I was watching the movie if the people were simply brain-washed and if so how did the lack of light end up killing them? Could a civilization such as this exist in modern times? I agree with you that there was a lot of symbolism in the light. You brought up a point that I hadn't thought about when watching. Light is often a symbol of knowledge and understanding and truth. It seemed that the light provided by alpha-60 was the light of his computerized logic. The people lived in the light, in the knowledge and understanding only of what alpha-60 provided them. When the light of the computer went out, they were lost, they knew nothing. This was the symbolism that I saw. I agree with you that the man driving at the beginning had his own light, his own truth. And as you said, only some survived when he took control of the light, and essentially, took control of the truth in alphaville. The ones who survived seemed to be the ones who were psychologically strong enough to overcome the brain washing that they had endured under the rule of alpha-60.
