Wrapped a hankerchief 'round his gun; said there's nothing wrong with what I've done . . .

So, previously, I had only been familiar with about the first third of Assassins.

Thanks to Youtube, this has changed.

The Guiteau and Czolgosz ballads don't seem liable to leave my head any time in the next week.

I also found that when you read about/hear about/research the assassinations and then listen to the soundtrack, it increases in awesome- ( Read more... )

ASSASSINS, YAY. I just bought this a while ago (the Broadway recording; complete with Impostor-Rochester) and I absolutely love it. Sondheim's lyrics in this show are just so Myaow-meltingly thoughtful and good, and the tunes are freakishly brain-catching. My favorite song is the Ballad of Guiteau, both lyrically and thematically. It's great.

Wow, now it's like I'm the only person I know who doesn't attend (or had at one point in time) St. John's...

^_^ I intend on soon purchasing. . .I think it's the Broadway soundtrack. It's the one with only 9 tracks because songs are stuck together rather than each having their own tracks, like Into the Woods' soundtrack. It's also the one with Victor Garber as Booth. I bought "Something Just Broke" from the revival soundtrack just because I like it. I adore the lyrics and music of the whole show, but "Czolgosz" is possibly my favorite, with "Guiteau" second. Charles Guiteau is just. . .kind of hilarious. It's close to impossible to read about him without laughing at least once. How do you get a free love commune to hate your guts?

Clearly, you're the only sane one in the room who has the wherewithal not to succumb to its shiny unique curriculum. :P

Victor Garber-Booth is from the off-Broadway soundtrack, which was the original cast. I don't remember why it wasn't originally on Broadway, but I suspect it had something to do with the show scheduled to premiere, basically, right in unison with 9/11. Baaaad timing.

Flaed prefers the off-Broadway soundtrack (and tried to sabotage my purchase of the Broadway, seriously) and intends to let me listen to it sometime soon, so I'm guessing that both recordings are really good.

Guiteau, as a character and a song, is a really interesting mix of hilarious and depressing. The rest of the characters in the cast are so angry and bitter, and that is very moving, but there's just something incredibly tragic about Guiteau staying stupidly optimistic and bright-eyed up until the very end. It really had a big effect on me, hearing the song for the first time.

Ah, okay. I wasn't really sure, I just clicked on something on iTunes and listened for the Victor Garberness. ^_^ So, yes, that'll be my choice, because Victor Garber kept me company through five seasons of an often annoying spy-fi show ( ... )
