I'm really sorry to hear that. Have you tried putting out posters or anything? It's very possible someone knows what happened to him, and even if it's bad news, it's probably better than not knowing.
I would second the idea of putting up signs (though I know you're leaving soon) - in a situation like this, the worst thing is the not knowing. And if it is possibility number three, then the person in question will be able to contact you.

I might do so. . .it almost seems like an extremely long shot considering how few houses are in the area. . .
. . .but it's worth it, nonetheless. ..
