It's possible to prevent runs, but you need to use an impervious edging such as a heavy plastic. Sink it fairly deep, and let it come up fairly high. (Like 8? 6?" deep, 4-6"? high.) Then there's something you can do with the dirt height inside vs outside, but I'm hazy on that.

Drains = punch holes, screen with fine mesh. If it gets through fine mesh, it is destined to rule our planet in any case.

I have also heard that you can plant it in the ground via a trash can. Dig the hole large enough for a round trash can of decent size. Remove the bottom of the trash can you are using, and place it in the ground, with the lip above slightly. Fill halfway to 3/4 full of dirt and plant bamboo. Bamboo roots grow fairly shallow and spread out horizontally, and you get the drainage from it being planted in the ground.

If you want free bamboo, we're in the process of removing it in our backyard. You are welcome to some of it. It is a pain to dig up! The roots are really strong, but fortunately are shallow. The previous owners planted a bush and it is growing out of hand. We're also placing ours in pots for the time being. I may try to sink it using the method above when we have some money.

Anyway, would be a good excuse to have you over and prove that Nathan and I did not drop off the face of the earth, despite us being non-social...

I might have to work for part of that day, but I could swing by for a bit.
