Happy Endings

Aug 17, 2008 10:23

"That's something I think is growing on me as I get older: happy endings."

First days go by, I learn to talk,
instead of a baby's cry,
Start to figure out how to walk
'stead of falling down,
I'm happy, I don't think of
endings...
only here-and-now
It's enough to be, to try...

Seasons pass and I grow, I see
there's people I love around...
Hugs and green grass,
a school's playground...
Sunlight and starry nights,
Puppy's bark and scabby knees,
stories at day's end, and peaceful sleep,
end to begin, happily.

Daddy, Mommy, a big brother's laugh and a sister's smile,
Forever can be decades, or a little while,
but it's real enough for me.

Grown now, and I face harder tests,
A sister's hurt,
A brother's death...
is this what I pay for
all the rest?
No light without dark, no joy without pain,
or so they always say.
But in the midst of the worst times,
I can hope to start again,
Someday--
A lover's arms, an artist's dreams,
a child's laugh, home and hearth,
however risky, or fleeting, it seems...

Forever can be measured in centuries, or a single
breath,
Stories can have a hundred ends...
I won't write my own, but I know that it'll be true,
and not yielding to despair, or loneliness,
perhaps not a hero's legends,
but MINE and I'll follow it to the last
word,
love, work, struggle, rage, laugh, and live
til there's nothing left of me
to give
