It's been quite a popcorn thriller, as evidenced by the 99 comments to the LA.Streetsblog post linked above. Holy freakin' crap!

My favorite quote, from the originator of the now mostly-dead MetroRiderLA blog:
Stay in your cars folks lest you want to get involved in a goddamned RACE WAR over a stupid fucking train.

Yeah, I get involved in this kind of stuff by..choice?

*sigh*

Cool!

Are they ever going to make use of those old train tracks that go under the 10 freeway and by the library on overland, they are actually in good condition and go by the westside pavillion all the way to Santa Monica. Are they going to redo it?

That's the "Expo" Right of Way, known in a previous life as Pacific Electric's "Santa Monica Air Line". So, yes- it's this route that was selected to carry light rail trains from downtown, through Culver City, to 4th Street in Santa Monica.

As is presently happening in the "Phase 1" segment past USC, etc, the existing jointed-rail track (which are only in good condition if you're a freight train- let's be honest here!) will be dug up and replanted with modern dual-track CWR (continuous welded rail) designed for light rail vehicles, utilizing the existing grade. There is a station proposed for Westwood Blvd which would serve the Westside Pavillion (and connect with bus routes to UCLA).
