Are you working with CSS at all? If you are, I know of a nice layout with the banner, the side nav bar, and the "regular" bar. Let me know if you're interested and I can send the link your way...

I am, and actually a friend of mine pointed out where I was screwing up. It's all good now, though I did decide to keep the space, since I like what I'm doing with it. Now, though, I can control it better.
