Meetings at Sunrisenotes: Romance. Drama. Angst. oh, and i decided to make this a three-shot :P.
It was surprisingly harder than Hankyung thought it would be to stay away from the boardwalk. It had become a habit to wake up early in the morning. He always had to stop himself in the middle of changing before sunrise.
Although avoiding Siwon was no problem. Thankfully, he had no classes with him at all. However, he did have the same lunch period. All he had to do was stay at Donghae’s table and rush out of the cafeteria as soon as the period ended. Occasionally, Siwon would catch him on the way out and say a simple “Hi” to him. Just to not be rude, he would wave and attempt a smile, usually ignoring the lightheadedness that came along.
Hankyung probably should have known that he couldn’t have lasted for long. He was growing restless all day, and he realized that he was trying not to think about Siwon more than he was actually staying out of his mind. He had gotten so used to meeting him every day, he was starting to go insane.
Hankyung breathed in slowly, resting his chin on his hands in the class he was currently in. He looked down and fiddled with his pencil, impatiently tapping it against the desk. It was another one of those classes, and he couldn’t wait for it to be over.
All of a sudden, a paper was slammed down in front of Hankyung, startling him enough to make him jump. He jerked his head upwards, meeting the glare of the teacher.
“Maybe if you didn’t spend as much time daydreaming than studying, you would have gotten a higher grade than this.” She hissed sternly. As she walked down the aisle, Hankyung just sighed and flipped the piece of paper over. He didn’t need to see the test to know how bad the grade was. He was about to rest his head on his hand again when someone gently shook his arm.
“Hankyung…are you okay? You’re daydreaming more often…and you never smile anymore…” He heard Sungmin whisper. Hankyung blinked hard and nudged his hand off, shifting his body so he wasn’t facing him. Hankyung heard a sigh, and felt slight regret, but he had other problems to worry about.
As Hankyung was collecting his materials, he looked up to his teacher clearing her throat.
“Hankyung…may I see you for a second?” Hankyung curiously headed to her desk, a sense of fright washing over him for a second. Instead of the yelling he expected to get, the teacher leaned forward with a worried expression.
“I’m worried about you, Hankyung. Getting low grades on tests just isn’t like you.” She started, lowering her voice as the last of the students filed out of the classroom. He shrugged and rubbed the back of his neck, shifting his gaze to the floor.
“I’ve been distracted.” He stated simply. The teacher drummed her fingers on her desk once and stared firmly into his eyes.
“I’ve seen. You space out more in class. You used to be such a good student, but your grades haven’t been looking so good.” Hankkyung grinded his teeth together, hating the fact that it was the third time he had been told that he was spacing out.
“Hopefully you can bring back up your grades, alright?” She sent him a half-hearted smile, cleaned up her papers and went on her way out the door. Hankyung sighed and reached for his own books, but it suddenly got swiped off the table. He stared surprisingly at his books scattered across the floor and lifted his head up to see Kangin leisurely leaning against the side of the teacher’s desk. A heavy feeling started to settle inside his stomach at the sight of the creepy smile on the latter’s face.
“What do you want, Kangin?” Hankyung sighed tiredly. Kangin stood straight up, kicking one of his notebooks away.
“I thought I said for you to stay out of my way.” Kangin said menacingly, roughly pushing Hankyung’s shoulders.
“Like I knew that you had a class in this classroom right after me!” Hankyung growled, pissed off at the sudden loss of balance. He just wanted to get out of that classroom at that moment, so he bent down to pick up his notebook when Kangin’s foot slammed down on the cover. Hankyung winced, retracting his reddening fingers. He glared up to see him roll his eyes.
“China boy, I wasn’t just here to push you around.” Hankyung stared with a disbelieving expression. He stood up, rubbing his fingers.
“Oh gee, for some reason, that never crossed my mind.” Kangin’s face contorted into one of annoyance and pushed him back again.
“Just shut up and listen, boy.” Hankyung glanced warily behind him, noticing the students from the next class starting to enter the room. He definitely did not want a lot of people around if he was going to have this conversation with Kangin.
“I’ve noticed that you aren’t hanging out with your little boy toy anymore.” Hankyung gripped the desk, his breath stuttering in his throat.
“Excuse me?” He asked dryly. Kangin smiled; amused that he got his attention so quickly.
“You know, Choi Siwon.” Hankyung swiped up his fallen notebook and hurriedly walked to the other side of the desk, only to be stopped by Kangin. He sighed and stepped back, eyeing the increasing amount of people filling the seats.
“I don’t have time for this, Kangin. I’m late for my next class.” He mumbled, trying to step past him, but Kangin stretched out a hand and pushed him back again.
“Will you stop doing that?!” He stated firmly. Kangin stepped closer and crossed his arms.
“Just tell me and then you can go.”
“There’s nothing to tell.” Hankyung started, desperately trying to exit the classroom. God, He thought. Where is the goddamn teacher?
“You know, I’m starting to think that you like him.” Kangin said sweetly. Hankyung started breaking out into a cold sweat when the classroom quieted down. He could almost feel the stares boring into him. Hankyung gritted his teeth and unsuccessfully tried to push past him.
“I’m not fucking gay so just let me through.” This time, Kangin pushed him roughly enough to send him skidding across the ground. The classroom was dead silent.
“Ooh, you seem a bit touchy about that subject.” Kangin said playfully. Hankyung’s fingers twitched, his temper starting to boil.
“Look, I really need to-”
“I swear you’re lying, Hankyung.”
“Can we not-”
“If you just tell the truth, we can get this whole thing over with.”
“Leave me alone, Kangin.” Hankyung said threateningly. Kangin laughed and narrowed his eyes at him.
“Or what?” Kangin snickered. Hankyung shoved him harshly to the side and forced himself not to turn around and smack him across the face.
Just when he reached the doorway, Hankyung stopped at the sound of Kangin’s voice.
“Is that the best you can do, China boy?” He breathed in deeply and crooked his head to the side, angling it so Kangin was in his peripheral vision.
“You know, you’re just as much of a coward as Siwon.” He could feel his muscles tighten as he stood stock still in the doorway. Hankyung didn’t even care that class was about to start, nor the fact that the entire class was listening.
“He always avoids people, never even dares to approach them. He doesn’t even make the effort to have friends.” Hankyung closed his eyes and turned around on his heels.
“That’s not…That’s not the reason why.” Hankyung whispered, his voice shaking. Kangin smirked, dangerously taking a step forward.
“It’s no wonder that a reject like him is hanging with a reject like you.” Hankyung flinched at the insult thrown at Siwon. The once heavy feeling in his stomach now burned dangerously with anger.
“Shut up.” He growled lowly. Kangin grinned widely at the scent of a challenge arising. He knew that he had hit where it hurt the most.
“Quite a sad commentary that he’s going to ditch you soon, you know. Unfortunately, you haven’t been in this school long enough to know his reputation. The thing is, after he’s gone, that’s going to be it for you. He’s probably the only friend that you-”
Hankyung then lashed out at him, faster than either of them could believe. Before he knew it, Kangin was on the ground, holding his stomach in pain. He was trying to challenge him, but he never thought that Hankyung would have the courage to do something like that. They were both breathing heavily, ignoring the excited whispers floating around the room.
“Get a teacher, get a teacher!” Someone hissed. Hankyung shifted his eyes to the person rushing out of the room before focusing on Kangin again. His eyes automatically hardened.
“Looks like you’re a bit sensitive. Maybe you really are gay.” Kangin coughed, staggering to his feet. Hankyung saw the man in front of him wobble, but he wasn’t stupid. Even in this state, Kangin was probably still stronger than him. He knew that he could just run out of that classroom. He could escape at any time; but for some reason, he couldn’t. He took a deep breath, knowing that he was going to regret what he was about to do later.
“Is there a problem if I am?” He growled. The whispers immediately fell to a long silence which sent his stomach churning. He definitely didn’t like the way the smile curled on Kangin’s face. Before he could even blink, a punch so strong landed in his stomach, forcing the breath out of his lungs. Hankyung cursed under his breath. Kangin was faster than he expected him to be.
“That’s for punching me in the stomach.” He leaned forward ad kicked Hakyung harshly in his shins. Hankyung wrapped his had around his leg in pain.
“And that’s for protecting an idiot like Siwon.” Hankyung widened his eyes, curling his fists in anger. He shot up ad pounced down on Kangin, landing punches wherever he could find skin. A devious smile began to spread across his face as the sweet feeling of revenge flooded through him. Somewhere along the way, he felt a serious blow across his own face, but he didn’t care. The burn only pushed him on.
A pair of hands grabbing hold to his arms caught his attention and broke him from his trance. The hazy cloud cleared up from his eyes as he once again focused on a now bloody-faced Kangin. He brought a shaky hand to his own face, wincing at the sting of a few fresh cuts. He gently pressed on the skin beside his eye and whimpered slightly at the pain.
“That’s enough, Kangin. And Hankyung…I’m very disappointed in your behavior. Both of you, report to my office. Now!” The principal’s voice boomed. The two students shared a glare as they stalked out of the room.
Hankyung was fuming in the seat of the principal’s office as the principal scolded them. The anger settled down into an aching sadness that pained his chest. Hankyung didn’t know what he wanted to do with himself. He didn’t care about what punishment he got, but he did care that this whole thing happened over Siwon, a kid he swore never to have attachments with.
A part of him was relieved when the principal gave him the benefit of the doubt and left him off with just detention for a week. Kangin, however, had a three-day suspension. That did little to remove the burden off his shoulders as he walked his way into lunch.
He slid into a seat at the table he normally sat at and slumped his shoulders. Beside him, Eunhyuk widened his eyes and gently brushed Hankyung’s cheek with his fingers.
“Jesus, what happened to you, Hankyung? That bruise looks really bad.” Hankyung scrunched up his eyebrows and nudged his hand away. He took out his lunch and silently started to pick at his sushi with his chopsticks.
“Hankyung, are you really okay?” Hankyung looked up at Sungmin and sighed.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Sungmin gave him a look, but continued eating his lunch anyways.
“Where were you this morning, Hankyung? I didn’t see you.” Eunhyuk asked. Hankyung gripped his wooden chopsticks and stabbed a piece of sushi angrily.
“In the principal’s office.” He mumbled. There was a gasp from Eunhyuk as Yesung leaned across the table.
“What did you do?” As Hankyung chewed, he gripped the chopsticks tighter.
“I got involved with Kangin.” He said harshly between gritted teeth. Yesung exchanged a look with Donghae and leaned a little more forward.
“But what happened?” Yesung pressed. Everyone stopped eating at the loud snap from the wood in Hankyung’s hand. Yesung slid back into his seat and stared at Hankyung. He slammed down the broken chopsticks and stood up in his chair.
“Considering that I mentioned Kangin, I don’t think I need to say anymore.” He growled, walking off to the utensil carts. He breathed slowly, forcing himself to calm down. He hated being so worked up over this stupid little problem. He also absolutely hated how Siwon was the one who started his ill temper. Hankyung didn’t even want to think about him at the moment.
“Um…Hey Hankyung.” Hankyung’s heart jumped to his throat at the familiar deep voice. His hand jerked and slammed against the metal cart, annoying Hankyung even more. However, when he raised his head and was about to yell at him, he couldn’t. Hankyung wanted to think that it was the sad gaze on Siwon’s face that made him lose his voice. He wanted to convince himself that it wasn’t the fact that he hadn’t seen him in a long time. However, he just couldn’t.
“Hankyung, I really, really need to talk to you.” Siwon said softly, leaning over the cart. Hankyung automatically leaned back when his brown eyes came closer, closing up his throat. He swallowed and opened his mouth when a rush of blood went to his head. He squeezed his eyes shut and gripped the sides of the cart, facing the ground.
You wouldn’t believe how much I need to talk to you too. He silently thought. His eyes shot open when Siwon’s hand wrapped around his arm.
“Hankyung, are you okay?” Siwon said, lowering his voice yet again. Hankyung withdrew quickly as he felt Siwon’s breath down his neck. He was too close. Way too close.
“I’m fine. What do you want?” He snapped, completely regretting it when he saw Siwon’s expression fall.
“Hankyung, please. I really need to talk with you.” Siwon pleaded. Hankyung paused, avoiding his gaze. He narrowed his eyes and let his arms fall by his side, fidgeting with nervousness.
“I’m sorry Siwon, but you’re the last person I want to talk to right now.” He stated stubbornly. The ache in his chest threatened to overtake him when Siwon’s eyes hardened.
“Look, I don’t know what I did, but I’m sorry? If you didn’t want to talk than you could have just said so.” Siwon said firmly, turning around and walking away. Hankyung bit the inside of his cheeks, drawing out blood. Another snap caught his attention as the plastic fork broke in his hands. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair in frustration, slumping by the cart. Nothing seemed to be working out for him that day.

“Ow! Really Hankyung? That’s the fifth time you’ve knocked me down already!” Eunhyuk complained, rubbing his arm. Hankyung stared at him blankly and shrugged his shoulders.
“Sorry.” He answered flatly. He was about to start the routine again when Eunhyuk grabbed his wrist.
“Hankyung, I wanted you to join me in the dance club to relax. But right now, you seem more stressed than ever.” Eunhyuk said quietly, careful not to let the others hear. Hankyung wiggled out of his grasp and turned around. He heard Eunhyuk sigh and put his head on his shoulder.
“You know, maybe you should take a break. The club’s over in a few minutes anyway. You don’t have to come next week.” Eunhyuk said softly. Hankyung shook his head and attempted a smile.
“It’s alright. Trust me, dancing tires me out enough to relieve some stress.” Eunhyuk smiled back, seeing some of his old attitude back. He and Hankyung then continued to pack up their bags and headed out the door when the club was over.
Hankyung had to convince himself to smile because of Eunhyuk’s worried feelings over him. But that did nothing to lift the burden off his shoulders. He held onto the straps of his bag more tightly and waved to Eunhyuk.
“Next dance practice is Thursday, right Hyuk?”
“Actually, it’s been moved to Friday.”
“Alright, thanks. See you later!”
Hankyung sighed comfortably, the warm breeze calming his nerves. He was walking down the sidewalk when someone grabbed his wrist. He froze when that voice invaded his thoughts once again.
“Hankyung hyung.” The sound swirled in his ears and made the calm smile on his face disappear. Hankyung whipped around and wriggled his wrist out of Siwon’s hold. Hankyung knew that he had to get out of there before he sank too deep in his charm.
“Sorry, can’t talk now. I…I have to go someplace.” He desperately turned around again, but Siwon slid in front of him, blocking him from “going someplace.” Hankyung’s breath hitched when he felt Siwon’s hand purposely holding his shoulder.
“That has got to be the lamest excuse I’ve ever heard from you, Hankyung. Come on, at least talk to me.” Siwon said. Hankyung eyed the pathway that Siwon was currently blocking and sighed in defeat. However, he definitely didn’t have the time (or the mental strength) to stay and talk at the moment.
“Tomorrow, okay? Boardwalk, right before sunrise. The usual.” Hankyung whispered quietly, his throat starting to dry. When a grin spread unconsciously across Siwon’s face, Hankyung couldn’t help but smile back. All he wanted was everything to be back to normal when a meeting with Siwon didn’t mean so much.
As Hankyung was walking away, a larger smile stretched across his face at the thought of meeting him yet again the next day. Maybe there really was another chance in everything going back to normal.
