title: Improvising
pairing: SiHan
rating: PG
summary: Siwon and Hankyung are rehearsing a scene from Romeo and Juliet.
notes: Romance, slight humor. Fluff? Oh, and not my idea. I got this from a book I read and I thought it was really cute. And it's told in script form. Just saying.
The time is 2000. The setting is a rec room in a middle-class home in a middle-class neighborhood in middle-class Korea. An old couch sits against the wood-paneled wall where a poster of the band Super Junior hangs at an angle. SNSD's "Gee" plays softly as the light rises. Two teenagers costumed in casual clothes - jeans, a polo, sneakers - stand a few feet apart, each holding a paperback book with the cover bent back. They are rehearsing a scene from Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo: Alright, I'll be Romeo and you'll be Mercutio.
Mercutio: Wait, why do you get to be Romeo?
Romeo: Because you like acting enough.
Mercutio: Oh gee, that's such a great reason.
Romeo: Siwon, I was joking. If you want to...
Mercutio: (Sighs) Just read the script Hankyung.
Romeo: (Reading) Give me a torch. I am not for this ambling. Being but heavy, I will bear the light.
Mercutio: But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?
Romeo: That's not your line.
Mercutio: I'm improvising.
Romeo: Well, knock it off. Our teacher isn't grading on improvisation. She's grading on memorization. You want to improvise, join the drama club. We've got to get this scene down.
Mercutio: It's not like I didn't want to join. Drama club was already full.
Romeo: (Reading)...Being but heavy. I will bear the light.
Mercutio: (Laughs)
Romeo: What?
Mercutio: You read with such concentration.
Romeo: Come on Siwon!
Mercutio: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. (Reading) Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance. (He gently sways to the music, taking one step closer towards Romeo)
Romeo: (Reading) Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes with nimble soles. I have...What are you doing Siwon? Get off me! (He pushes Mercutio away)
Mercutio: I was dancing. Like the scriptt says.
Romeo: The script does not say Mercutio dances with Romeo.
Mercutio: (Smiles) It's implied.
Romeo: No. No, it's not implied. That's stupid. Romeo and Mercutio do not suddenly start dancing together. Will you stop messing around?!
Mercutio: (Laughs) I didn't know you took acting so seriously.
Romeo: I don't. I just want to pass this class. Or at least pass this project.
Mercutio: (Reading:) You are a lover. Borrow cupid's wings and soar with them above a common ground.
Romeo says nothing. He stares at Mercutio.
Mercutio: What?
Romeo: (Shakes it off) Nothing. That was...very Harrison Ford.
Mercutio: Really? Han Solo or Indiana Jones?
Romeo: Han Solo all the way...you know, if he spoke Shakespeare.
Mercutio: Cool.
Romeo: Definitely. (Reading Not I, believe me. You -
Mercutio: We did that part already.
Romeo: Oh? Oh yeah. Um...
Mercutio: You are too sore...
Romeo: I am?
Mercutio: That's the line, Hankyung.
Romeo: Right. Thanks. (Reading) I am too sore enpierced with...Okay, I don't have a clue what's going on in this scene.
Mercutio: (Laughs) Hyung, it's not that hard. Mercutio is trying to get his best friend to live a little. Romeo has all these grand ideas about romanticlove, but Mercutio just wants him to have some fun. Stop being so dramatic. Let his guard down and see what happens.
Romeo: Someone's done their research.
Mercutio: I like acting. (Pauses) You know...I also stumbled across another piece of information.
Romeo: What is it?
Mercutio: Shakespeare scholars have suggested that Mercutio had a thing for his best friend. That they were maybe more than friends.
Romeo: Been reading many Shakespeare scholars, Siwon?
Mercutio: Hey, as I said I stumbled across it. I looked some stuff up when I picked the scene.
Romeo: I think you're reading too much into this play.
Mercutio: Not me. the Shakespeare schoolars.
Romeo: (Nodding) Right. Shakespeare scholars.
Mercutio: I mean, he effectively dies for his best friend. I'd do that.
Romeo: (Playfully) Aww, you'd die for me?
Mercutio: (Playfully) Wouldn't you die for me?
Romeo: (Playing along) I might kill you. Especially if we blow this scene tomorrow.
Mercutio: (Laughs) Nice. I tell you I'd die for you and your response is to threaten my life. Thanks, Hankyung. It means a lot.
Romeo: Okay fine. I'd die for you.
Mercutio: Really?
Romeo: Well, I wouldn't take a sword to the gut, but maybe I'd donate a kidney. I'd undergo invasive surgery for you.
Mercutio: Doesn't sound quite as romantic.
Romeo: If you wanted a love scene you should have picked a girl for your partner.
Mercutio: I didn't want to do a scene with a girl. I wanted to do a scene with you.
Romeo: (Staring curiously) ...Oh.
There is an awkward pause.
Mercutio: (Clearing throat and reading slowly. With uncertainty.) And to sink in it, should you burthen love. Too great oppression for a tender thi -
Romeo suddenly kisses Mercutio.
Mercutio's eyes go wide in surprise, but he doesn't pull away. The paperback slips out of his hands. He kisses back. It is awkward, rushed, comfortable, and perfect.
They finally break.
Mercutio: (Speaking quietly) That was definitely not in the script.
Romeo: (Smiles) I was improvising.
Mercutio: ...Maybe we should join drama club.
Romeo: (Dropping the paperback in his hands) Maybe we should.
Romeo kisses Mercutio again.
End of scene.
