I am rereading The Lord of the Rings for the first time in eight years or so, now that the memory of the films has faded and I can enjoy the books as books again. Right now I am about halfway through Fellowship, and I am puzzled ( Read more... )

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was seized by the sudden urge to reread LotR this winter. I just finished it, and am reading the Silmarilion again now.

I was really surprised how many lines in the movies were taken directly from the books. There were changes, of course, and necessary simplifications, but I feel the movies got the spirit of the books well.

I love the combining of Arwen and Gildur's characters - the idea of a kick-ass elf maid appeals to my inner D&D gamer. :)

Really? I hated it, mainly because I found the actress completely bland and wished we saw far less of her. The whole, "I am Arwen! I use Timotei!" rescue in soft-focus was infuriating.
