At Jim's last night as I was paying the bill, my waitress told me my Pride wrist band must mean that I "have them all." She was holding onto my hand while telling me that, mind you. I told her that actually it meant pride in being gay, and she continued to hold onto me but changed the subject to how she wished she had invented the wrist bands ( Read more... )

you are so amazingly relevant! i am currently wearing my band, with pride, at work. you are also a role model for the outspoken queer activist inside me that, once in a while, curls up into a ball and doesn't want to stand up.

Good ending, my friend. Good ending. (For some reason it's not letting me log in, but this is Julie, in case you didn't know) Anyway, at that conference last week, I met someone from the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, and she's supposed to be sending me one of their "words matter" T-shirts. Here are the links if you're interested: http://www.nlgja.org/ for the organization and http://www.cafepress.com/nlgja/591687 for the T-shirts.
p.s. We are both fabulous and cute! ;)

Thanks, Julie J. =) I was actually going to be in San Antonio for a pre-workshop (I think) on queer issues in journalism education, but I was still dealing with the aftermath of my birthday party. My friend Cathy who worked for GLAAD for 15 years wanted me to come with her...and I wish I could have! Thanks for the links.

My friend Matt was wearing a pink one of those, for breast cancer awareness. Some dumb frat bastard walked past us on the drag and screamed at him, "What is that, queer awareness?"

I'm not sure what that was supposed to mean... Also, why is wearing a pink wristband "queer", but not a hot pink polo shirt? So many questions...

Because it's okay for frat guys to wear pink polos. It's still not really okay for me to wear pink, though. But I do.

But hey, I thought UT and Austin were tolerant places? Totally erased of racism, heterosexism, classism?
