Spock nodded slowly. "I have never had such a friendship," he said, his voice very low. "Logically, it is not necessary for a satisfactory life filled with meaningful work."

Wow. Whoa. I never thought of this angle. Spock is astounded that someone would want to--that someone could--show him such loyalty. Sort of speaks to the traumatic life he's had. He thought that by losing his mother, he lost the only person who would ever love him like that, but now he's seeing that it's possible for him to form that sort of bond again. Neat.

Yeah. Poor Spock, he really hasn't been very happy. At least now he's finally met Jim. :)
