Prologue

Chapter 1

2 years later

Ryo placed the plate on the table and went back to the counter to check on the next order. He had been working at the cafe for the last six months. The customers were friendly and tended to give good tips, especially the few high school girls that frequented the place. As he was waiting for the next order to come up, he glanced out the windows of the cafe. The streets were empty and buisness was slow. Most people were either at work or school now. Outside the sun was shinning for the first time that month and Ryo was stuck inside with only a cook who didn't seem to be able to say more than a few words at a time and an elderly couple sitting quietly in the corner for company. He breathed a heavy sigh as he turned to grab the order. All of a sudden he stopped as he glimpsed the sight of sunlight reflecting off of beautiful auburn hair.Tatsuya, he immediately thought, but when he looked again all he saw was a young girl passing by on her way to work.

He missed him more than he let on, mor than he let himself believe. Even after two years, he missed him. He sighed for the nth time that day as he grabbed the plate and headed over to the couple's table.

Ueda was taking a shower letting the blood go down the drain as he thought about that night's events. It was bloodier than he had planned. Everything was going according to plan, until that girl came out of nowhere, and then there was screaming, blood, and alarms, He hated killig little kids, but that was the only way he could have escaped without being caught, at least that's what he told himself.

He was out of the shower, in bed, and about to fall asleep, when there was a knock at the door. He considered not answering it, but he knew it could be important, so he got up and opened the door. It was Kazuya Kamenashi and that meant he was in trouble. Without a word, he let Kazuya into his apartment, and Kamenashi sat on the couch in Ueda's living room as Tatsuya went into the Kitchen to get some tea. They sat there on the couch together for awhile drinking their tea in silence.

"So, how was your night?" Kame suddenly asked while sipping his tea.

"So, I take it you know what happened."

"Not entirely, just the result. That's why the higher ups sent me to talk to you before you went into work today."

"They could have just waited for my report."

"There wasn't time."

"But, still..."

"Just tell me."

Kamenashi was starting to get angry. Ueda could tell by the strong edge in his voisce, so he decided to tell him the story. "Everything was going fine, just as I had planned. I was in his bedroom; his wife was dead on the floor. I was about to kill him when his daughter walked in and started screaming. You can guess what happened from there."

"What happened to Akanishi?"

"Jin is an idiot. He probably saw something shiny on the floor and got distracted." Ueda's annoyance was evident in his tone.

"Give him a break. He's new at this. He's only twenty."

"That's no excuse! I was eighteen when I started. Plus, how old are you?! He should know better!"

"True, but not everyone can be perfect all the time. It's not like you have never made a mistake or gotten distracted. Of course it's not like you have anything in your life to distract you."

Ueda glared angrily at Kamenashi for awhile, until he shook his head and sighed. "Can we not talk about this now? I want to get some sleep before I have to go into work, and if you have nothing left to talk to me about, then can you just leave?"

"Fine, get some sleep. I'll be going, just do better next time."

"Ok, I'll try."

"It's not try, it's do."

"Fine, I'll DO better next time!" Ueda said exasperatedly holding the door open for Kame, "Good bye!"

"Good bye, see you at work." Kame said as Ueda slammed the door in his face.

Ueda went back to bed and attempted to fall asleep. But it was no use, since Kazuya's words were still ringing in his head. It's not as if you have anything in your life to distract you. Ueda spent the rest of the night pondering this statement. Of course, I have things in my life. I have friends don't I. Sure I might not have gone out with them in awhile, but everyone likes to be alone sometimes. I also might not have a lover like Kame does, but I don't need that in my life right now. Of course when the right person comes along, I might think about dating then, but there is no one in my life like that, right? Ueda finally went to sleep about an hour before he had to wake up that morning, still pondering Kame's word about his empty life and why his heart ached everytime he thought about that special, nonexistent, person in his life.
