It was a fairly warm Saturday evening yet Ryosuke shivered as he sat on the bench. He was at a local train station and was waiting for his date to come. He wore a white shirt, jeans, and sneakers. A black and gray plaid scarf was wrapped around his neck, which matched his black sunglasses. It was weird for someone to wear glasses on a dark night, but being an idol, it was a common thing.
His phone beeped and he hurriedly - and clumsily - grabbed it from his pocket. There was a message from Mirai which said, “Sorry, I’ll be late tonight. Something came up.”
Ryosuke let out a grave sigh and fidgeted with his phone before he decided to call Mirai. There was no answer on the other line so he slumped back on the bench.
It was already seven o’clock. A few more minutes passed and Ryosuke snoozed off. A tap on his shoulder made him open his eyes. He saw her standing in front of him wearing a turquoise shirt, Capri pants, and doll shoes. Her hair was tied in a neat ponytail. She frowned at the sight of Ryosuke sleeping.
“Mirai-chan!” he shot up hastily, almost bumping into her.
“Hi. I’m really sorry I’m late. Something came up at home.” She said.
“No, it’s okay. So, are we good to go?” Ryosuke beamed.
She nodded.
They ate dinner at a nearby restaurant. Aside from the part where Mirai almost fell off her chair from laughing as Ryosuke nearly choked to death when he stuffed his mouth with a weird combination of an onigiri and a strawberry, dinner had been fine. They soon decided to go to a karaoke bar.
The room had a sofa and a TV monitor beside it. There were also speakers on the four corners of the room. Mirai (though tone deaf) sang first, after a gruesome five minutes of fighting over on who goes first. She chose Happiness by Arashi.
As the song started she merrily faced the TV and bounced her head back and forth, along with the beat. Ryosuke removed his glasses and turned to Mirai, who started singing. Only Mirai’s back was visible but Ryosuke felt his insides being churned. Her hair lively moved along with every bounce of her head. Along with it, Ryosuke’s face flushed a bright red color. He shook his head and turned to the screen.
The song ended with Mirai howling and howling and giggling. Ryosuke too was laughing. Then Mirai turned her head smoothly and told Ryosuke “It’s your turn!”
Ryosuke stared at her. She nudged him and handed him the mic.
“Ryo-chan? What’s wrong?”
He gaped and stirred as he felt a sudden jolt of electricity from the mic he held.
“Nothing…” he smiled. Haruna Ai-san, thank you! He thought.
He sang a couple of songs while Mirai cheered and sang with him. As the last song came - First Love by Utada Hikaru - Mirai was leaning on Ryosuke. The latter’s left arm was around her neck on a gentle manner as his right hand held the mic. He sang the song with such passion that it almost made him tear up. Mirai clutched on his arm and sang along.
“You are always gonna be the one…” Ryosuke sang wholeheartedly that if one would only listen, they wouldn’t know it was Ryosuke Yamada singing. It was far from his usual cool and lively mood of singing. In fact, it was so serene that it could fit as a theme song for a romantic valentine’s movie.
“Now and forever… Oohhh…” Ryosuke ended. A few seconds passed but Mirai didn’t move. Ryosuke dropped the mic on the floor slowly and looked over at Mirai, who was sleeping on his arms. He smiled and stayed like that for a while before a knock on the door startled him. They needed to vacate the room since there were other costumers waiting for their turn too. He patted Mirai who lazily opened her eyes. When she realized her position, she hurriedly shot up and blushed. Ryosuke just smiled at her and led her out of the room.
“I really had fun tonight.” Ryosuke told her as they were seated on a bus on the way home. She smiled and yawned.
“You might as well finish your dreams of me.” He teased while she blushed profusely. Without hesitation, she laid her head on his shoulder and dozed off once more.
Ryosuke took her hand and intertwined their fingers. His palms were hot compared to Mirai’s.
“I can stay like this all my life.” He smiled.
