Prologue
Yamada Ryosuke.
He’s my love.
The only name I hear.
The only face I see.
He’s the color of my life. The way he talks, the way he smiles, the way he does things perfectly- I love everything about him. As long as I see him, I feel like the happiest girl in the world. Lucky me, we were born with our families so close to each other. My parents like him, and in the same way, his parents like me as well. They even wanted us to marry when we grow up. Of course I somehow liked it, though I didn’t tell them. And I know he wants it, too. And even though we don’t talk much often, he knows me and I know him very well.
Yes, I know him very well.
That’s what I thought before.
“Sugooooiii Mirai!” Umika, her seatmate exclaimed, “You made the prettiest chocolates of all!”
The other girls gasped in amazement. It was Valentine’s Day. All the Kameyo middle school girls of Class B gathered around the room and formed a circle showing the chocolates they personally made for their crushes on that special day. Some made plain circled-shaped ones, others had big brown hearts, inside were written the words, I love you. Few of them gained bad results and became subjects of mockery.
Shida’s was different. She made small heart shaped chocolates wrapped like cupcakes and coated with different colored candy fluids. For finishing, she topped each of them with chocolate syrup that made the sweets look yummier.
“You really did this yourself, Mirai?” One of her classmates, Ayame wondered. “You didn’t tell us you’re good at these stuffs.”
“The guy should be very special.” Another teased.
All of them nodded in agreement. “Tell us who he is, Mirai-chan…onegaishimasu!” they pleaded.
“Ano…it’s a secret. Hontou ni gomen nasai.” She bashfully smiled and bowed her head slightly.
“Oh well. We can’t push her. It’s a confidential matter anyway.” Their girl president defended.
“But whoever he is, he sure is a lucky guy.” She whispered while gazing sadly at the chocolate she made (that was more of a disaster). Her silly actions made everyone laugh harder.
“Mirai-chan, next time, please teach us how to make better chocolates,” Umika asked. “…especially kaichou.” She laughed.
“U-UMIKA…” their so-called kaichou dimmed her eyes.
“M-matte kudasai!” Umika swiftly ran while the other followed her.
Ryosuke liked sweets so she was pretty sure he would like them as her classmates did. She had finally decided to speak. She would tell his childhood crush about her affection for him. “I hope he accepts it,” was all she could say.
When the class was through, she sought him everywhere to give her gift but he wasn’t around. Soon, a guy approached her and informed that he had seen Ryosuke walking to the rooftop. Her lips could not help but express a smile. Then she bowed low, thanking the guy.
She hurried to the place he told her Ryosuke went, carrying the colored chocolates she arranged neatly in a white box. A few moments later, she reached the top at last.
Can I do it? She wondered. Will he believe an eleven year-old girl? Her feelings were true anyway.
She was on the act of opening the door but when she saw Ryosuke with another guy, she stopped. The person was his best friend, Chinen Yuri.
“What do you think, Yama-chan?” she heard him ask.
They were just a few meters away, so she could clearly hear what they were talking about by just opening the door a bit. She was not supposed to do it; however, some kind of force urged her to listen to their conversation.
“She likes me a lot. How can she resist a good-looking guy anyway?” Ryosuke bragged.
“You big-headed monster,” he laughed. “I wonder how Mirai would react if she hears you saying these things?”
Why did Chii include my name? Mirai thought. What are they talking about?
“I’m telling you, Chii. That Mirai girl is deeply, CRAZILY in love with me just like any other girls here in the campus. See, even smart, nerdy chicks fall in love with an extremely handsome and talented boy. She just feels awkward to tell me what she feels but surely she’s waiting for this day. I even heard her Mom say she’s making super delicious chocolates for me.”
His friend looked surprised. “Hontou?”
“Alright, alright. Let’s have a bet.” Yamada announced.
“What bet?”
“If she doesn’t give me chocolates today, I’ll treat you for an ice cream.”
“Sugoi naa!”
“Hep…hep…BUT, if she does, you’ll be the one to treat me, okay?”
The other agreed for the bet.
“Better prepare your pockets, boy!” he exclaimed. “I’m pretty confident here.”
Mirai could not believe what she just heard. The person he thought to be her kind and loving prince charming was actually hiding behind a mask. Chinen was right.
He’s a BIG-HEADED MONSTER!
