Chapter 4

After the startling incident, Ryosuke hopped on his bicycle while Mirai rode on his back. The guy’s face turned serious. “We should travel faster if we don’t want the same thing to happen to us again. It’s already 8, very dangerous for us.” He told her. “So hold on, Mirai.”

“Ahmm…o-okay.” She replied then carefully put both her hands on the other’s broad shoulders.

“What are you doing?” he reprimanded. “You’ll fall if won’t hold on tight. Grab my waist.”

“O-okay.” Mirai embraced his waist as he commanded her to do though she herself felt awkward with the situation. Soon, Yamada pedaled the bicycle with full force and quickly they drove along the road.

They bumped and bounced as the two-wheeled vehicle passed through the stony grounds and swiveled along the turns and curves of the way. Realizing the adventurous ride to be risky, Mirai tightened her grip at the boy’s waist to ensure that she won’t fall down. That time, she was no longer feeling awkward.

“We’re here.” Ryosuke announced.

Mirai jumped off. “Yosh! Let’s go inside.”

“No, I’ll go now. It’s embarrassing if your parents see my face this way.”

“Papa will be disappointed if he realizes that you didn’t even bother greeting them after guiding me home. I’m sure they want to thank you.” She convinced. “And…”

“And?” he repeated.

“I have to treat your wounds first. They have to be attended immediately or they will get worse.”

Ryosuke smiled a loving smile at her once again…the loving smile that slowly melted her heart. Without hesitation, he joined the girl inside.

“Tadaima!” Mirai called while the whole family rushed to welcome her. Upon seeing the guy’s worn face, the couple was bombarded with questions. Mirai tried to calm the tension within the group while Mrs. Shida rushed upstairs and took the medicine kit with her. Ryosuke and Mirai explained what had happened in detail, half was a bunch of lies.

“Lucky, a strong and courageous Ryosuke was there to protect our dear Mirai, desho?” Mirai’s mother indirectly praised the lad as she cleaned his bruises with alcohol.

“But still, we don’t know what might happen in the future. So, you must be extra careful next time.” Mr. Shida cleared.

“Hai.” The two responded.

Mrs. Shida’s cat-like eyes turned back to Ryosuke. “Ryo-kun, arigatou!”

“Doomo arigatou, Ryosuke.” Mirai bowed, thanking him as well.

“No, it’s nothing.” He blushed.

“Say Otouchan, isn’t it better if Ryosuke will eat supper here tonight? He’s our guest anyway.” The oldest woman in the house suggested.

“Bu…”

“No more buts. Otouchan, can you call his family and inform them he’s here?”

“Hai.” Mirai’s father stood up.

When Mirai and her mother were already done preparing the dishes, Ryosuke was forced by the family to eat with them. He had not a single chance to explain that he had already taken his supper. After eating a whole some meal, Mr. Mirai volunteered to take the white-faced young man home with his car. There, he sent his regards then left him, almost vomiting.

The next morning, Yamada and Chinen walked to school together. The younger lad inquired of his best friend’s bruises as he was deeply concerned with him.

“Ahh…this? It’s nothing.”

Yamada explained what happened last night to his friend. A mark of surprise was first painted in his face but then it changed into a teasing smirk as he heard the romantic moments of the two.

“Do you remember when you told me when we were yet in middle school that Mirai likes you?” he paused, then continued. “But as I can see now, it seems that you’re the one who likes her.”

“WHAT? That will never happen as long as I live.” He blurted out.

“You’re like the guy in the drama I’ve watched who kept denying his feelings for the girl but his action shows it.”

“Stop it, okay? That isn’t a good joke. Besides, you know my type, Chi. I like sweet and lovely ladies and most of all…I don’t like any girls who try to surpass me. I never wanted to be defeated by a mere girl.”

“I hope you won’t eat your words.”

“Of course not…” Yamada paused and his eyes shone.

“Nani?” Chinen inquired looking to the direction his friend’s eyes were looking at only to find a very lovely lady walking in a pretty great posture. She wore a stylish, wavy hair but what really got their attention were her sparkling, black eyes.

Is it because they were lucky that they saw her wearing a Horikoshi uniform?

“Oh no!” they heard her exclaim when the piles of books and papers at her hand dropped. Seeing the opportunity, Ryosuke rushed to her and helped her pick up her things.

“Thank you,” the lady smiled.

Wow, her smile is so charming! Ryosuke told himself.

“Here,” he handed the books and papers. “You’re welcome.”

“So, you’re a Horikoshi student?” he started.

The lady nodded. “Yes.”

“But I haven’t seen you before.”

“I’m new here. My family just moved in this place that’s why I, too have to transfer from Tomoya High to here.”

“Good. By the way, I am Yamada Ryosuke.” He offered a handshake. The other lent her hand and shook his. “My name is…” She paused taking her mobile phone from her bag and pressed ‘OK’. “Excuse me.”

She had a shot conversation with the caller on the other line. “Okay, I’ll be there. Bye!” she ended the talk.

“Sumimasen Yamada-san but I have to go now.” She bowed slightly then proceeded her way.

“B-but I don’t know your name yet. Matte!” Ryosuke shouted but the girl was already afar off to hear him.

He felt a light pat on his shoulder. “Ne Yamachan, the lady left something.”

Yamada looked down to the direction his friend, Yuri was pointing and saw a cute, fashionable pen. He carefully picked it from the ground. “Seems like the story has not ended yet. She should purposely left this for me to return.”

“Baka, Yamachan.” Yuri laughed at the guy’s joke.

******

Who’s that girl? I didn’t even know her name. I want to see her again. Ryosuke was buried in thought.

“Shi-chan,” Umika softly worded. “Your prince charming looks serious.”

Shida turned at her back wondering about the weird actions of the guy. Does he have any problem?

“Go now. Comfort him. That’s what fairytale princesses do.”

“And it’s not a fairytale!”

Chinen looked at the two girls who sat at his right side. He stared at Umika in a terrifying mode. “Can you please quiet down a little?”

Umika was insulted at his action and talked back. “Why, do you own this room? Make your own noise! No one hinders you. Hmp!”

“Because if you won’t, our teacher will scold you.” He answered.

Umika turned to see the teacher coming in the room.

“Okay, class. Before we begin our lesson for today, I would like to introduce to you your new classmate.” The class adviser persuaded someone outside to go in. Later, a tall and slim girl entered the room.

“Ohayou, minna-san. Nishiuchi Mariya desu. Dozo yoroshiku!”

Yamada looked at the girl in disbelief. She was the same girl he had met a little bit earlier!
