There's no easy way to determine a "better" fan. While judging it from how long someone has known them can be a convenient way to do so, it isn't a good way to definitively say he/she has been a better fan than someone else. Just take me, for example - I've known AKB48 much longer than I've known Morning Musume. Does that mean I'm a better fan of AKB48? Not necessarily. (and I'm not ( ... )

If a fan considers themselves knowledgeable enough about the group/artist, digging through a lot of their history etc as if they've been through it ever since their debut, then I think that's cool. If there's another fan like that that is very knowledgable plus was a fan of the artist from their debut, I think it's natural for 'elitist' feelings to form but at the same time I don't think it's cool for them to act that way, because the former example probably hadn't even known about the artist's existence as they were too young, and or did not have access to Japanese pop music. So basically if you use it as something to elevate yourself above other fans all the time, then that's really lame, and not what being a fan is really about. I think the most important thing is sharing the love for the music and everything.
