Author's Note: OMG... the chapter is so HiruMamo. LOVE LETTER!!! XD That cracked me up like crazy.
He found her in the park, sitting dejectedly on a bench. Coming up from behind, her slumped shoulders and head hung low spoke of unspeakable torment - his fault.
It's my fault.
Water, he thinks, is Nature's most corrosive agent. Given time, it can destroy anything - even a hardened heart. Sighing irritably, he took a seat next to her, opting to look the other way. "You're fucking crying again."
"I'm not." Her voice; steady, calm. Of course. Anezaki Mamori doesn't cry just because. He felt her shift. "I just... don't want to consider the idea of us having to play a match without you."
Hiruma thoughtfully blew a gum bubble and stared up at the clear, cloudless sky. "And?"
"I want to believe that we're all strong enough to protect you." Mamori whispered. "I want to believe that so badly. But every time I see Gaou, I..."
"Fucking manager, I'm not the fucking shrimp." Hiruma interrupted with a hint of amusement and Mamori bristled. "I'm not comparing you to - "
"You are." He cut in calmly and Mamori stiffened. His gaze softened and a small smile tugged at his lips. "During the first half of the Seibu-Hakusyuu match, I guess you were thinking 'if Kid can withstand Gaou, then Hiruma surely can.' But then the fucking cowboy got creamed and now you can't face the prospect of - "
"How can I!?" Mamori burst out angrily. "None of us want to, but we're all thinking about it. It's painful..." She despairingly hugged her body. "Everyone is so important. The idea of losing anyone is unthinkable. Losing you..."
Hiruma stared at her for a while, uncertain what to say. At length, he drew from his blazer an envelope and set it between them, keeping his hand on it. "Believe in me." He said quietly. "Because if you don't... then no one else will, Anezaki."
Mamori raised her glistening eyes to him and then at the envelope. She was repulsed by the idea that she would have to take charge if he gets injured - hates the idea with all her being. But...
"Promise me." She placed her hand on his and he reflexively turned his hand palm upwards and gripped hers. "Promise me I won't have to open this until the second half."
Hiruma took a deep breath and stared up at the sky again.
