So. Being out of school right now, I have a lot more free time, so I've recently discovered the wonder that are TV dramas. I always forget how much I love visual storytelling media until I come back to it ( Read more... )

Torchwood IS painful, but oh, the characters! S3 is much better though, for the record, and I'd rather someone watch that than S1/2.

We seem to have extremely similar tastes when it comes to what makes a good show, so I'm just gonna rec some things I enjoy.

Firefly (see icon XD)
My alltime favourite show. Definite team dynamic, excellent characters (of both gender -- it has some of my favourite strong female characters, without necessarily being FORCEFUL women), some snark and witty comments, but overall a drama, but with little shipping. (The romance there is is very in-character.) Brilliant cast (look, it's Castle!), interesting episodes, interesting character development/revelations. Gorgeous costumes/set, but without seeming fake. And you'll get through it quickly enough, there's only 14 episodes and a movie. And sci-fi western. But it doesn't have a lot of technobabble. And no explosions or sound in space. XD

SherlockA fairly recent one, but it's only 3 hours long so far. Sherlock Holmes adaptation set in modern day, but so ( ... )

You know, you pretty much hit my entire "To Watch" list right there, but I was seeing what other people would say...

I guess I have good taste? XD (I also support the Fringe suggestion - haven't watched it, but several friends say it starts slow but then it gets super awesome mid season 2)

Prison Break (the first season at least) is good, and so is 24... the females in the shows can be pretty stupid at times though...

Dexter is good too, but that really fits none of your "things you like" list.

I'll give it a shot. I was kind of 'eh' on the one episode I saw, but I usually give shows at least 3-4 eps to redeem themselves unless they're really bad or supremely boring. Part of it was that the guest star managed to really get on my nerves, and obviously I can't judge a show completely on that.

I've also heard that the science can occasionally be phenomenally bad (and I was told this by someone who studied English in college!), but I've gotten through shows before by plugging my ears and going "LA LA LA LA" every time someone started to technobabble. XD

I really like Fringe!

AND I ALSO WANT TO START WATCHING WHTIE COLLAR. Because most people have recommended it to me.

White Collar is soooo addictive you don't even know. You should have heard me bitching when I first got into it (like...two weeks ago?) because it wouldn't download fast enough. And then I went out and ordered the first season DVDs off Amazon the day after I started watching it. I've already started my second watch through. >_>

For one thing, there's an OT3 vibe from the very first episode that's practically impossible NOT to ship. Even the actors ship it, from some of the comments I've heard on interviews. (Tim DeKay, when asked how his character, Peter, feels about Neal: "I caught him, now I get to keep him.")

And I NEVER say this, especially about guys, but Matt Bomer (the actor who plays Neal Caffrey) is HOT. I could stare at him aaaaalll day, he's THAT pretty. DAYUM, that man can rock a fedora and a skinny tie! (And that's not even getting into how he looks with his shirt off ( ... )

I am being too lazy to log out - it's Aubrey. XD

And I'm seconding the rec for Fringe. It is my current TV love, and hits all of the things you like dead-on (especially on the team dynamic and the strong female characters - Olivia has quickly become one of my favorite characters ever). However, as a caveat... the science is highly questionable, on so many levels - the show knows it, and it does operate on its own basically consistent rules, but it is, quite often, ridiculous ( ... )

I will take Fringe into consideration! I'm usually okay with questionable science as long as they at least acknowledge it and the internal rules of the universe stay consistent. I mean, SG-1's science is pretty terrible bat at least they're usually like "Goa'uld technology!" or "Ancient technology" which I can totally accept as a substitute for " we need a plot device and we have no fucking clue how science would really work ( ... )
