“September 11: Forgiveness is Not Part of the Lessons Learned”: A Critique
September 11th, 2001 is a day that people will ever forget. It is a day that will be written in textbooks. It is a date that future generations will have to memorise, much like we are taught of the atrocities committed by Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin. In his article “September 11: Forgiveness is Not Part of the Lessons Learned,” Dr. Charles Quist-Adade explores the steps taken by the Bush Administration following the act or terrorism on this historic day. In this paper, we will examine, or critique, the faults and virtues of this article.
In his article, Quist-Adade provides his readers with his views on the Bush Administration, and its lack of honour in how it handled the aftermath of the attack. Quite-Adade claims that for “God’s own country” the United States is not very forgiving, and admonishes the American government’s decision to engage in war with Afghanistan and subsequently Iraq. However, while many would agree with the premise of views expressed in Quiste-Adade’s article, our group being one of them (I’m sorry to put an opinion in the paper without first talking to your guys, let me know in your edits if you disagree and I will edit this bit), the article fails to address the fact that a government’s most important duty is that to its people and their safety. The American government needed to respond to the attack, and while immediately launching into war may not have been an advised first move, something needed to be done to appease the grieving American people. Quist-Adade also engages in card stacking; as we never see a mention of the other half of the argument in this article.
No matter which side of the debate one believes in, there is very little to be gained from belittling the Bush Administration for its rash decision. All that we can do now is help repair the damage and scars left behind after the attacks. The people who died in those planes on September 11th and the soldiers fighting for what they believe to be freedom will never be forgotten. May they all rest in peace.
Later.
