Summary: [AU fic] There was once a house, beautiful, big, and as the rumor's go...haunted. Yamaguchi Kumiko is forced to investigate. What secrets will she and the boys find there?
Previous Chapter:
Chapter 1 Saturday evening came faster than Yankumi ever expected. This was the moment she had been dreading about. It was the moment she had to head over to that house and investigate. But what could she do now? She couldn’t avoid it, knowing that Sawatari would be next door, probably checking to see if she was already there.
She cried silently in frustration, her hands on her head. Then she slumped forward and headed towards the house.
It was now or never. Preferably, she would’ve chosen the latter but unfortunately, there weren’t any other options but to head forward (and prepare to run away if there really is a ghost).

“Ah, that was great! We should do this again tomorrow! What do you say, guys?” Kuraki Satoru (aka Kura) suggested excitedly after a couple rounds of karaoke right after school. Thank goodness, it was the weekend. No teachers patrolling…for now.
“Sure, we can do that.” Ichimura Rikiya (aka Ichi) agreed with a smile. Honjou Kengo (Honjou) and Kamiya Shunsuke (Kamiya) agreed as well. “What do you think, Ren?”
“Eh? Oh, sure.” Kazama Ren replied, craning his head back and stretching his arms up high.
“What’s wrong, Ren? You seem…out of it.” Kamiya said, waving a hand in front of his face.
“Yeah, yeah! Dude, you almost had your head up in the clouds when I was singing my heart out in there!” Kura pointed towards the building they were in a few minutes ago.
Ren laughed. “No, that’s not it. I had too many things going in my head at that time. Besides, I heard you sing the same song over and over for the past twenty minutes.”
“That’s true! You gotta learn a new song, Kura!” Ichi commented, slinging an arm around the younger boy’s shoulders.
“Aw, come on! The only reason I sing that song is because I liked it! What gives?” Kura tried to explain.
“Right, right.” Honjou ruffled his hair with a wide grin.
“Hey, guys…isn’t that Yankumi?” Everyone turned to see a small but very familiar figure walking on the other side of the sidewalk. She must be having a bad day because her back hunched forward a bit and she kept shaking her head.
“It is…but what’s she doing this time of the hour?” Kamiya wondered.
“Oh, I got an idea! Let’s follow her! Maybe she’s doing something illegal.” Kura suggested, eyes widening with anticipation.
“I doubt she’d be doing something illegal…but let’s follow her anyways. I’m curious about what she’s doing.” Ren replied.
Everyone agreed and began to run after their teacher.
--
“Hey, I remember this neighborhood. Me and Kamiya used to take this path from junior high.” Honjou commented in surprise.
“Really? I heard some funny rumors here.” Ichi replied, eyebrows furrowed together. “Like this haunted house where no one knows where the owners are even though they lived there for over twenty years.”
“Whoa, really? How bizarre.” Kura answered with interest. “Do you think Yankumi’s heading there right now?”
“Most likely, I suppose.”
“Yeah, but it’s really unfortunate, don’t you think?” Yankumi asked, crossing her arms and shaking her head.
“Mmm…” Everyone chorused, glancing over to the teacher before jumping away from her in shock.
“Quit doing that!” Honjou nearly shrieked.
“Ah, sorry. Habit.” Yankumi laughed before continuing. “Anyways…what are you guys doing here? Shouldn’t you be at home?”
“We’re following you because we want to know what are you up to!” Kura sing-song playfully, grinning. “And who are you to tell us to go home? What about you, huh?”
Yankumi turned away from them, thinking, Of course, I wanted to go home! Home is way better than going to that haunted house!! She then turned back, smiling, “I’m a grownup and I have an errand to run. Speaking of which, I need to get going.”
“Ne, ne, Yankumi. We’re coming along too. And you can’t say no to that.” Ren said, just before she passed them.
“What? No! I mean-“ Yankumi fumbled, trying hard not to tell them.
“Still doesn’t matter. We’re curious.” Kamiya interjected with a smile.
“…” Well, what could she do now? They wanted to come along and unfortunately, she couldn’t outrun them because the house was very close by. She hoped the Head Teacher doesn’t find out then. “…I guess I have no other choice.” Again. she sighed.
The boys cheered on their victory.
Yankumi shook her head and smiled a bit. At least, she has company. She walked along the empty sidewalk with her students following close behind. It wasn’t long till she reached her destination.
“Uwahhh! I didn’t know you were going to that haunted house, Yankumi!” Ichi said in surprise.
“This is so cool! I’ve never been to a haunted house before!” Kura exclaimed enthusiastically.
“It’s huge…” Kamiya commented in awe.
Yankumi giggled uncomfortably. She really had a bad feeling about the house. But what could it be?
Suddenly, a voice smooth as ice called out, “Who the hell are you and what the hell are you doing here?”
Everyone turned to the source and was faced with a boy around the same age as Ren and the others, holding a bag full of groceries in one hand. He was wearing a thick dark beige coat (despite the fact that it was the middle of summer), black jeans and worn tennis shoes. His hair was a variety shades of brown and half his face was obscured because of a black scarf that was tucked securely about his neck, leaving cold dark eyes in its wake.
And despite the fact that he was glaring at them, everyone could tell he was about to faint. His body swayed noticeably and his eyes were half-lidded with exhaustion.
“O-Oi, you alright?” Kura asked in concern, taking a small step forward.
“I asked you, who are you and what are you doing here?” he demanded in a low threatening tone.
Kura instinctively stepped back, hands in front of him as if trying to get away from some dangerous animal.
“Uh…My name is Yamaguchi Kumiko and these boys” Yankumi gestured to Ren and the others and bowed slightly. “are my students. We’re…from Akadou Academy…and we are um,…admiring the neighborhood! That’s right! Eh…we just came across this beautiful house and-“
“Quit your lying.” The boy interrupted flatly as he passed them and to the house. He pushed the gate opened and turned, his glare never wavered. “I know you heard about the rumors about this house and I know you are curious about what’s in here. I’m not going to let you people come in.”
“Wait a minute. Do you…live here? In this house?” Ren asked.
“…That’s right. I live here and I demand that all of you leave now.” He headed straight into the house and slammed the door behind him.
Everyone sighed.
“That was…pretty tense.” Honjou spoke up after a moment. “What do we do now? We now know at least one person lives there…but he sure is ill-tempered.”
“I know what you mean.” Kamiya agreed.
“You think if we stay here long enough, he’ll let us in?” Kura asked hopefully.
“Doubt it. He seems very protective of his home.” Ichi replied, crossing his arms.
Yankumi was in a loss. If she wasn’t able to get in, then she’d be in a lot of trouble with Sawatari. Knowing him, he must’ve seen the interaction between her and the boy. But wait…if there’s an actual person living there, then that’d be all she need to convince him. Unfortunately, she need some proof. She shivered, rubbing her arms with both hands.
“Um…I think…I’ll be staying here for awhile. I…still have a few questions to ask.” She said suddenly, interrupting the conversation.
Everyone turned to Yankumi.
“Oh, yeah? Can we stay with?” Kura inquired, grinning widely.
“…I guess, if you want.”
“Wooooh!” Kura cheered as he turned to the others. “You guys staying too?”
Kamiya shrugged. “Sure. I have nothing better to do anyways.”
“Same here.” Ichi replied, raising a hand.
“Me too.” Agreed Honjou.
“Ren?” Kura asked.
Ren turned his gaze from the house to Kura and nodded slowly. “Yeah…I’m staying.”
“Cool!...So, uh…what do we do now?”
“I have no idea.”
To be continued.
