Material exploration vs. progress

So my goal when planning the curriculum for the school was to make sure there're varieties of materials at hand and that at every lesson there's a rotating exploration of various art forms: painting, drawing, collage and sculpting... half the classes indoors and have outdoors.

I think Technique would eventually come with enough repetitions over extended periods of time. It's like 40,000 hours of Malcolm Gladwell: what you need to achieve professionalism in a craft. But no kid would want to do it long enough if its a torture and no fun. Especially if a kid is gifted it would be horrible to kill their desire to learn, and IMHO best way to keep kids interested is to let them play while learning.
We love D going to your lessons exactly because they are fun and he gets to try new mediums and play doing it. Please do not change your way of teaching!

Thanks, T! Music to my ears. You're right about Gladwell and I do see great natural progress with students who attended for 4+ months. It's just not a case of immediate gratification and being able to put something on the wall after each class that worries some. I guess that's when I turn on my 'I'm not for everybody' mantra and try to let it go.
