Because it seems like it has to be said over and over

Just because I am pro choice doesn't mean I'm pro abortion. I'd rather that no one has to have one, because their birth control options and education helped them prevent any kind of unwanted pregnancy in the first place. But it's a good option to have available just in case ( Read more... )

Yeah, I'm pretty anti-abortion for a lot of reasons. I think an abortion ultimately represents a failure of the system. We either didn't educate a couple well enough on preventing pregnancy, we didn't make reliable birth control available to them, we didn't prevent a rape or molestation, we didn't provide someone with the resources to make single parenthood a viable option, we didn't prevent or screen for a potential birth defect, or we didn't resolve a gestational health issue. Somehow, some way, we as a culture didn't do something we needed to do to prevent that abortion from happening, and to me an abortion represents the loss of what could have been a potentially worthwhile, valuable life. So I want them to end.

However, till we as a culture *do* the things we need to do to prevent abortions from happening, I will use all the furious smiting at my disposal to work to make abortion safe, legal, and free of social stigma.

Much love,
Rowan

I have to add, though, that sometimes, even when all the "right" things have been done, they can fail. Birth control fails. Nothing is 100%. I know at least 5 people in my age category who have become pregnant in the last 4 years while doing everything "right."

So, even though I share similar feelings, and even though I'm not "pro-abortion," I would hope that it still remained an option even if we could somehow mend all those other factors... which of course, we can't.

Chris - I totally relate to you in this... during the US election, if I had read one more article or quote using the term "pro-abortion" instead of "pro-choice" I would have poked my own eyes out.

Currently, birth control fails. I believe 100% effective birth control is just as likely as eradicating gestational health issues. That is to say, a worthy scientific goal for 'someday'. Same with eradicating serious birth defects and ending rape. Interesting that you hit on that one, when there were several other things I said needed to happen to end abortion that also aren't a reality ( ... )

Oh, I think I only touched on the birth control issue because, unlike some of the items that you mentioned (such as ending rape/molestation), it sometimes seems generally accepted as something that we have "already achieved"... in the sense that, if someone is educated and uses it correctly, there shouldn't be a need for abortion ( ... )

This whole kerfuffle just makes me think of baby flavoured doughnuts.

Though, I did get introduced to the issue via Jezebel, who's news story opened with the following:
The American Life League has finally discovered the secret, immoral ingredient that makes Krispy Kreme doughnuts so very addictive: fetuses. And they are not happy.
