Although, I have to admit, the overwhelming amount of stuff we got as kids was pretty rad. It generally happened as a result of being part of a large family, as well as my parents ingenuity. But, although the volume was extremely awesome (honestly, I wish I had pictures, it was SO COOL to wake up to)... it always boiled down to almost the same thing described here... one or two really awesome things you wanted (though rarely expensive), a bunch of books, some pajamas, socks, chocolate, other relatively inexpensive sundries.
I do have to say though, that I sometimes wished I received less, but more thoughtful gifts. I still get a chocolate orange from the same aunt every year, despite the fact that I hate chocolate oranges. Those things are expensive! I wish she'd save the cash and just gimme a Christmas hug :D
Yeah lots of little stocking stuffers is different from a truckload of toys/video games etc. I like little things but just it seems like the volume of BIG things kids get is getting larger.
Alex's brother has a 5 year old daughter... she gets like, insanely expensive and inappropriate gifts. Sort of a combination of broken family syndrome (give big gifts to make up for lack of time and attention) plus a healthy dose of "give her stuff we'd like too" (i.e. Nintendo Wii, etc)... even when she was little, they got her one of those LeapFrog "learning" game things and the games were like $35 each! For a 4 year old! GAAAH buy the kid a book!
i like this philosophy! christmas was particularly brutal for me as a kid because we were mega poor. i always dreaded the phone calls from my friends asking me what i got. now that i'm older i appreciate christmas as a time to relax, hang out with family and friends and do things like walk around looking at christmas lights, that kind of stuff. everyone is getting handmade gifts from me because 1. we are mega poor and 2. they tend to mean more.
