2006: the meme

Dec 31, 2006 00:29

1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
Well. Almost everything was new. Apart from cliches (first kiss, driver's permit)... Worldwide competition. Representing my own country. I traveled - I went on my first exchange - I spent weeks with no running water on a tiny island. I went to prom and took the PSATs. I had real adventures.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No, I didn't make any last year - but I think I will for this new year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My "summer sister's" grandmother died. She used to be my neighbor. That was really weird. She gave us a great book on Greek mythology and we used to swim in her pool. She was a great woman.

5. What countries did you visit?
France! Italia! And I loved every second.

6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
Hmmm. More money. And more... dedication. I have realized that there are certain things in my life I really care about, and I want to focus my energy more on those things than discovering other ones.

7. What dates from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
This was a big year.
January 15th.
April 5th - Left for France.
April 20th - Came back from France (le sigh!).
June 24th - I left the Cape to go to Maine for an intense training period on the island.
July 4th - We got a break from training to row to the nearby island and celebrate the holiday. That was so fun.
July 12th - Arrived in Genova.
July 14th - COMPETITION BEGINS.
July 15th - L'Espirit event. This was the day I met JESPER, the Fin. *faint*
July 21st - COMPETITION ENDS.
July 26th - Leave Genova.
September 26th - German exchange students arrive.
September 30th - My hutch party.
October 3rd - My "sweet sixteen" - got my permit and a surprise party.
October 13th - Final party with Germans day before they leave. :(
October 19th - French exchange students arrive.
October 21st - Took the PSATs and went to pumpkin carving party with Frenchies.
November 1st - Halloween party for Frenchies, insane drama with V. They leave the next day.
November 4th - Expedition on the gig! :D
December 8th - Some college visits.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
My performance in Genova. I'm very proud of myself for the whole experience, actually; I didn't think it would be as amazing as it turned out to be.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I have definitely had some lapses of judgment with my friends. I may have inadvertently damaged a good friendship I once had.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I consider myself very lucky to be able to answer "no".

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The blue scarf in Paris. The large amounts of gelato in Genova.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Everyone I met over the summer and the German exchange students.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The French exchange students when they came here.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Traveling.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The French exchange, seeing the Germans, but most of all... GOING TO ITALIA.

16. What song will always remind you of 2006?
"Places" by Blue Merle, anything by Les Enfoires, "Is It Wicked Not to Care?" by Belle & Sebastian, "Do it to It" by *cough* Cherish, "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire. And "CHICAGO" (Sufjan Stevens).

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? Ten million times happier than I ever thought I could be.
b) thinner or fatter? It has fluctuated (I was so strong and tan in July!), but I'm basically the same.
c) richer or poorer? I was the richest I've been this summer, but I've had to spend it. I will earn it back this summer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I'd done more community service and made more of an effort to get contact info from special people (like Jord *tear*).

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I wish ... I'd done less ... dwelling. This fall, I was occasionally a bit of a mess, rereading journals from this summer and listening to songs that would remind me of Italia.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
As usual, we went to Providence. Some traditions were changed or broken, but the skating party was amazing. Lucy, my cousin's daughter, is adorable. I got skiis! Then this afternoon we celebrated with my mom and Wendelin, and tonight I celebrated with some of my best friends but had a terrible time and stayed for 15 minutes.

21. Did you fall in love in 2005?
I fell in love with Paris. And rowing. And I fell in love with possibilities. There are definitely people out there.

22. How many one-night stands?
One. (And a half?)

23. What was your favourite TV program?
LOST. America's Next Top Model.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Katie.

25. What was the best book you read?
Hrmm... Guilty pleasures- The S.A.S.S. books, more Dating Game, 13 Little Blue Envelopes. Good books- The Picture of Dorian Gray, and...damn. I should've read better books.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
LES ENFOIRES. Vildnis, Flogging Molly. B&S CD's I hadn't listened to.

27. What did you want and get?
A new dog. A camera phone. SKIIS. A shirt from the Douarnanez crew. I got Jesper's blue Nokia hat and he even signed it for me ("Jesper Haga - 2006 Finland - I love you").

28. What did you want and not get?
Dave's email (he left before I could). Tickets to a B&S concert. A trophy for Team USA.

29. What was your favourite film of this year?
High School Musical :P Au revoir, Les Enfants. Borat.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
It was my "Sweet Sixteen." Tina, my German, was here. We went to get my permit - I passed my test and got it - then I went home and my 10 best friends jumped out at me! It was amazing. Zora called; Christian and Ludo emailed. My grandma gave me a ring that had been hers when she turned 16. Very emotional.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A higher ranking in Genova, the French exchange MINUS Madame Geueke, no drama with Mary's parents re: my party, keeping in touch with JORD and Pierre and Valentine and Thomas and Anthony.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Still low-key. Gotta love black fleeces and dark blue long sleeve shirts. But also - an infusion of vibrant colors. Other countries' team shirts, sometimes, and lots of SCARVES!

33. What kept you sane?
WRITING. The journals from this year are insane. The memory of Genova and the promise of Finland. Talking to Zora.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
mmmmmm Jean Bonnet from Au revoir, les enfants? :D And Stuart Murdoch. Probably.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Gay marriage, abortion, anyone trying to change laws about teens driving, the possibility of Bush sending more troops to Iraq (!?!?).

36. Who did you miss?
Jord, Anthony, Valentine, Pierre, Dave, Niklas, Victor, Michelle, Vasily, Robbe, Thierry, Giulia, Filo, JESPER, Anton, Joakim. Maria, Mary, Mylinda, Justin, COLIN, Brian, Jason, Jonathan. ZORA. Dammit. That's a lot and they're all from AC. :P

37. Who was the best new person you met?
See everyone above. ;) But mostly Zora, and also Laetitia (my french exchange partner) and TINA (my german)! :D Also, some of the other Germans, like Felix and Christoph.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006:
There is so much to do. Find what's the most fun - go as far away as possible for as long as possible - and while you're there, do everything. Meet everyone, look at everything...eat everything.

39. Song lyric that sums up your year:
Places do nothing but take me away from your side. And all that I want is to try and get back to the place that you helped me to find. Back to the place where I belong, which is right by your side.

In France

In Maine and Italia
