35 U-Kiss Fic Challenge Prompt: 23.Damaged [Kevin/Kevin]

Author's Notes: My friend commented this isn’t really Kevin-centric, more like questioning life, I’m sorry! I just wanted to complete the prompt :(.
A frail body lying on the hospital bed in the intensive care unit, an electrocardiograph machine attached to keep track of the rhythm of his heartbeat. For seven hours, the heart rate hasn’t changed. People outside were standing on their toes, afraid of the worst, praying for the best.
Why hope, when there’s despair? A thought lingered a little longer in the sanitized air.
-
Why see, when there’s darkness?
Kevin lives his life like he was blind. The colours around him were too bright, too bright for his eyes, so he stumbles over his own steps and fall. He picks himself up, but constantly falls, and when he finally got the hang of it, his elbows, his knees, his chin were all bruised and scratched by friction.
-
Why hear, when there’s silence?
Kevin lives his life like he was deaf. The sounds he hears are too loud, too deafening for his ears, so he tunes them out with cotton wool. He doesn’t see the car coming, he cannot hear it either, and thus is left confused when a kind person pulls him all the way across the street, tugging him, pulling him, bringing him away from danger.
-
Why taste, when there’s bitterness?
Kevin lives his life like he couldn’t taste. The flavours in his mouth were too strong, too strong for his taste buds, so he only eats porridge. He doesn’t hear his mother’s call, nor does he see her cry, and when he is finally at the dinner table, he only eats a mouthful. Despite his mother urging, pleading, begging him to eat, he doesn’t, only getting skinnier.

He doesn’t cry, but he’s-

Why feel, when there’s pain?
The lazing around, sitting there in a daze, examining the ceiling in bed, Kevin just didn’t want to move. He thinks he grew numb, too many bruises and wounds on him to feel anything. He could crash into a wall because he couldn’t see, but he doesn’t feel the swelling pain. He could be pushed out of the way by a cyclist because he couldn’t hear, but he doesn’t feel the sharp jab at his ribs. He could be eating a raw fish with bones because he couldn’t taste, but he doesn’t feel the scratches in his mouth and the churning in his stomach.
He vomits that day, but that’s all right, because it isn’t pain.
-
Why live, when there’re deaths?
Every second is too long to handle, every minute like eternity, and an hour never seems to pass. Kevin’s life is like his wall clock, stuck in the moment, unable to move on. His life had been running for a long time, twenty years to be exact, and now his energy is used up. The clock needs a new battery, Kevin thinks he needs a new life too. Only that no one walked into his room and look at his clock, no one knew it was dead. Only that no one came into his body and look at his heart, no one knew it was broken. Kevin doesn’t mind, he just wants to stay this way for as long as possible.
He could see his path clearly, despite being temporarily blind, for it’s a one way road to death.
-
Why love, when there’re heartbreaks?
The ticking of the clock has ceased, so has the beating of his heart. Kevin isn’t afraid to die, he is afraid of having nothing to die for, the way he is now. He loved, he was loved, so he put in his all in this man, only to be stripped off everything he had. He gave him his everything, thus is left with nothing, just blankly watching the world spin. When the breaths he takes in are stolen, he thought that would promise forever. Until he realised it wouldn’t, and at the very moment, history was repeating. His breaths were stolen again, strangled and suppressed, leaving him gasping for air. Only now, the cardiac arrest meant something serious, he thinks as he dreams of his sister screaming with her tears falling on his feeble arm.
He cannot hear anything, except for the cracks spreading around his heart, building up to the final blow.
