Prologue :: Chapter 1a :: Chapter 1b :: Chapter 2 :: Chapter 3

Dongho was sweeping the floor the next day before the opening, much to the confusion of Soohyun.

“Did something happen?” Soohyun chuckled. “Why are you back to this?”

“Kevin-hyung said he went back home and fell asleep immediately, but he had something very important thing to do by today.” Dongho shrugged, the skills used to sweep the café’s floor still intact.

“Oh?” Soohyun nodded lightly.

-

When Kibum entered, Soohyun tried to make Dongho attend to him first, noticing that Kevin was nowhere in sight. Dongho acted like there was an awful stain on one of the utensils they were going to serve to the customers, vigourously cleaning it as Kevin bounced to Kibum.

“Dongho…” Soohyun frowned, only sighing when Dongho managed to find a flaw. “That’s a scratch, can’t be cleaned.”

“Oh.” Dongho nodded with an innocent look, placing the fork back into the basket.

Kevin wanted to take his order. Since he asked so nicely, Dongho didn’t want to snatch the job away from him.

“Good morning!” Kevin greeted, a menu and a tray in his hands as always. “Let me lead you to your seat.”

“Morning.” Kibum greeted back, following Kevin as a silent agreement to his words. “You look energised.”

“Slept well last night.” Kevin giggled, stopping a little after Kibum’s usual seat to gesture at it. “Please have a seat~!”

Kibum looked at the table and smiled, nodding. “My coffee is already waiting for me, huh?”

Kevin then tip-toed away, while Kibum arranged the table and noticed a pink note after pushing the cup of coffee away. He placed his belonging on the table neatly first, before picking it out and reading the note.

The neat handwriting and cute background was already enough to make Kibum smile, as he took a sip of his espresso, eyes scanning the paper. He chuckled lightly as he reached the end of the note, even flipping the paper around to make sure there wasn’t any extra note.

Thank you for the first three days of my job! You’ve been nothing but nice to a new waiter like me, although you really need not have done so. Thank you for not minding when I spilled coffee over you, and thank you for giving me tips on how to become a better waiter! I’ll take note of customer’s habits more closely now, and will definitely become as good as Dongho! :)

Kevin’s heart beats a little faster, wondering if he just made a fool out of himself, or that Kibum’s chuckle was something more like a smile expressed in voice. He wanted to ask, but was also not brave enough to, deciding to hide himself for a while until he had to serve other customers.

Kibum then placed the piece of paper aside and turned on his laptop, before clicking a little here and there and then starting to type away. Kevin bit his lower lip, wondering If that was a signal. Something like, “I got a note from this waiter, to thank me? Hm, I get these kinds of thing many times, it’s not special. Forget it, I shall do work.”

Kevin was then left in his depressed mood for the day.

-

“Kevin, you look really listless.” Kiseop frowned, bending his back to look up at Kevin. He smiled a bit, relieved when Kevin returned the smile. “You want to go home to rest or something?”

“Nah, I’m okay.” Kevin let out a deep breath, smiling brightly. “See?”

“If you say so…” Kiseop shrugged, though telling his observations to Alexander, who obviously had something to say.

“Kevvy~!” Alexander frowned worriedly, and reached over the counter to pat Kevin’s head while feeling his forehead. “You’re not having a headache, fever or anything of that sort, right?”

“I’m okay.” Kevin reassured with a bigger smile. Sometimes, being worried for is a big burden instead of something to be glad about.

Alexander took a minute to decide whether or not to believe Kevin, when he remembered Dongho was the only one taking orders right now. With a new hand shooting up, Alexander nodded and pushed Kevin gently away from the counter, hurrying him. “All right then, go take orders!”

Kevin took in a deep breath.

-

“Erm, what would you like?” Kevin decided to take a more formal approach, just in case Kibum thought his note was childish, awful, or plain stupid.

“The same, double espresso.” Kibum shortened his reply, smiling gently. “Thanks, Kev.”

Kevin’s heart fluttered when he heard his name said that way again. He blushed, returning to his usual self, that uncontrollable smile taking over his features. With a small, shy voice, Kevin shook his head. “I should be the one thanking you.”

“Well, you already did.” Kibum brought out the neatly folded note that he had earlier put in his wallet when Kevin wasn’t looking. “So until I write you a note myself, I’ll thank you for serving me with your beautiful smile.”

As if that was the medicine to his illness, his face brightened and bowed a little, before skipping to the counter and telling Kiseop the order.

Alexander raised an eyebrow at Kevin, smirking knowingly. “I shall keep this a secret~!”

“What?” Kiseop blinked, clueless. Even after his countless whines, Alexander wouldn’t give in. “Tell me!”

“No.” Alexander laughed evilly, setting the cup of double espresso on Kevin’s tray. “Kevvy, go bring this to him!”

Kevin bit his lower lip to fight the smile, though he himself didn’t understand why he would wear a smile thinking of the customer. Maybe he just wanted recognition as a waiter, and Kibum served as the best reviewer.

Yeah, maybe.

He then brought Kibum’s coffee over, and stayed around a little longer, as if hesitant to leave. Kibum looked at him curiously, before an idea struck him, leaving him unable to stop himself from smiling incessantly.

“Please sit.” Kibum rubbed his cheeks a bit, as they were hurting from his wide smile. Kevin tried not to squeal at how cute Kibum looked. “Um, maybe that’s not a good idea. Why don’t you look for me when the café is less crowded? I need your permission for something I have in mind.”

Kevin looked around and saw that there were more customers leaving than those coming in. He mentally apologised to Dongho for being selfish before turning back to Kibum and taking a seat opposite him, smiling. “It’s okay, I think It would get crowded soon, so now is the best time.”

“Aha.” Kibum checked his watch while agreeing. “All right. Hm, do you know what I do on my laptop everyday?”

“Type?” Kevin giggled at his obvious answer.

Kibum chuckled, head nodding in affirmation. “I’m actually a writer. I work for multiple online sites as programmers and whatnots to earn a keep, which is usually more than enough with a brother paying for the house bills. After doing my job for the day, I’ll spend the rest of my time writing. I’ve not actually written anything that was published with my name on it, only really short stories included in various compilations. Starting from February though, I decided to explore novel writing.”

Kevin sat forward in his chair, face expressing his interest. “Wow. I want to read!”

“Hm…” Kibum contemplated about the issue for a while, chuckling. “Well, you can read it after I’ve finished it. I promise you’ll be the first. How about that?”

“Can’t I read it first?” Kevin pouted cutely, head dropping down in mock disappointment.

“I don’t like to have my unfinished raw work out, it makes me feel insecure.” Kibum smiled faintly, shaking his head. “The reason why I told you all that is because, I want you to be in my story.”

“Huh?” Kevin jerked his head up and blinked quizzically. “Me?”

“Yep, can I have your permission to use your character in my story?” Kibum grinned adorably, and all Kevin could do was nod. “Thank you, Kev! I’ll write you out to the best of my abilities then. All right, I shall not hold you back any more. There’s a customer diagonally up front.”

Kevin waved a bit and quickly got back to his job, mind sometimes wandering back to Kibum.

“Me…?”

-

Mystery about Kibum revealed~ :) Is that all the answers to Kibum's questionable background? :D
