Kibum was more of a night person, as compared to maybe, Alexander. The older member was a mix of sunshine and smiles (and harmful UV rays) in the morning, only needing a few minutes to warm up and shake away any hints of fatigue to “enjoy the new day!”.
If you woke Kibum up on the wrong side of the bed (because he never wakes up himself), then you'd suffer a long, intense glare sent your way for at least two hours, with an exception of one very special member.
“I made waffles!” Kevin smiled brightly, slightly tired but easily influenced by Alexander. “Come on, hyung, I even helped applied toothpaste on your toothbrush!”
Kibum groaned, jerking his arm back roughly and pulling the light Kevin onto himself instead. Sleepily rolling Kevin off him, he shifted a little to find that perfect position once more.
Kevin sighed, massaging Kibum's fingers, and then slowly up the older's arms. He moved to rub Kibum's cheeks and then started pushing Kibum's eyelids upwards in an attempt to open those eyes.
“Kev...” Kibum growled lowly, having less of the scariness he expected to hear in his own voice. “Leave me alone.”
“No.” Kevin giggled. “Xander-hyung would scream in your ears with his endless nags. Soohyun-hyung would arm lock your head, Eli would come in with pots and pans, Kiseop will take embarrassing photos of you, Dongho will come in with a permanent marker. Do you really want me to leave you alone?”
Kibum yawned, instantly scowling. “So that's why I woke up with a black kiss mark?”
“Uh, no.” Kevin scratched his head. “I think that was Xander-hyung's obsession with seaweed lipstick. Dongho superglued the other side.”
“I had a rash for weeks.” Kibum gritted his teeth, sitting up thanks to Kevin's pull.
“That's why I'm here~!” Kevin sang, pushing Kibum off the bed and continued doing so until the older was in the toilet. “Are you seriously not doing anything yourself? I mean, I don't really mind but it might be somewhat awkward if I have to help you pee.”
Kibum woke up at that statement, pushing the younger hurriedly out of the toilet.
-
The whole group was laughing as Kibum dragged his feet towards the dining table. Kibum settled between Kevin and Soohyun while ignoring the happy atmosphere, lazily grabbing two waffles and then stuffing them into his mouth.
Alexander looked distastefully at the way Kibum was eating, while Kevin helped pour a glass of milk for Kibum who was going to choke in-
“Eugh.” Kibum coughed, reaching for the glass of milk Kevin handed to him. Gulping down the contents, he gratefully thanked Kevin by handing the empty glass back.
Kevin chuckled silently, exchanging Kibum's plate of messily bitten waffles with his own nicely cut up bite-sized ones. Chocolate syrup was even prettily poured over them to add flavour.
Alexander sighed, standing up and leaving the table with yet another dramatic sigh. Dongho quickly slipped away in case they made him do the dishes, while Soohyun gave Kibum a pat on the back.
Eli and Kiseop looked at each other.
“You'll do it.” Eli raised both his arms in some sort of defence. “I did the dishes last night.”
Kiseop sighed in agreement, giving Kibum another glance. “Kevin, you're too nice to him.”
Kevin smiled wordlessly, finishing the waffles Kibum had eaten before and then cutting up the leftovers in case the older was still hungry. Eli left casually, making his way to the couch while Kiseop had to clear up the table.
Kiseop shook his head with a grumble, having an urge to kick Kibum for being the jerk he had always been.
-
“Pst, Kevin, you awake?” Kibum hissed, shaking Kevin's arm gently. Giving the younger boy two more shakes, he waited to see if the younger would wake up.
Kevin stirred, groaning softly as he blindly reached for his phone. He then checked the screen for the time and rubbed his eyes in an attempt to open them. Yawning, he sat up and cocked his head to a side. “Hm? What do you want to do at 2am in the morning?”
“Let's go for a walk.” Kibum whispered. “I can't sleep.”
Despite the fatigue in him screaming for him to stay in bed, Kevin swung his legs off the bed and pushed himself up. Unsteadily walking, Kibum slid an arm around Kevin to support the younger to the door. Kibum then slipped into slippers and took a jacket in case Kevin got cold.
“Recently, I can't sleep.” Kibum sighed, walking to the nearest park for better air. “Sorry for asking you along.”
Kevin shook his head with a smile, though too tired to reply.
Kibum smiled back gently, his hand holding onto Kevin's while enjoying the slight morning breeze.
“What would I do without you?” Kibum sighed, words inaudible due to Kevin's half-conscious state.
Kibum knew of everything Kevin did for him, as well as the other members. They would cast him dirty glances due to his lack of response to Kevin's warm actions, sighing when Kevin doesn't even seem affected at all by Kibum's mild reactions. It wasn't like Kibum was being mean or anything, it was just that the sun is too bright and the morning is too early for him to do a thing. And when the night comes, Kevin is too sleepy to realise what Kibum wants to show him all day long.
Kevin fell forward suddenly, and Kibum instinctively caught the younger boy. Watching Kevin's peaceful face, Kibum chuckled softly.
“if you were too tired, you could've just said no.” Kibum whispered, carrying Kevin in his arms towards the park he intended to go. “But thank you for coming along.”
Quietly, he soon reached an empty bench in the park. Sitting down and shifting Kevin into a more comfortable position, he stared up into the sky.
“I still remember you once said you like stars. And when I tell you stars are just balls of light in the galaxy, you would look sadly at me and demand that I apologise to the stars for insulting them.” Kibum smiled faintly, words trailing off as the comforting warmth between them lured him into sleep.
-
Kevin stretched his arms and wondered how he ended up in both Kibum's arms and the nearby park.
Realising that maybe the dream he had was real, and Kibum really asked him if he would take a walk with him, he facepalmed himself and wondered if he had been a spoilsport. Gently shaking Kibum awake, he realised he was too cosy on Kibum's lap.
“Oh my, your legs might get really numb.” Kevin bit his lips apologetically, climbing off the older cautiously.
Kibum stirred, arms grabbing Kevin's waist even more tightly then before. “Mm...”
“Hyung, let's go home...” Kevin cooed, prying Kibum's arms off him with much care, only to feel Kibum press his head further against Kevin's chest.
Kevin blushed, unable to ease his trembling heart. He could quite literally hear every single beat of his racing heart, as if threatening to wake Kibum up.
“Hyung!” Kevin squeaked, the redness in his cheeks refusing to go away. “Hyung!”
Kibum finally stirred a tiny bit when Kevin pushed his head backwards. The grip around Kevin's waist then loosened, and Kevin tried escaping before Kibum could realise anything.
Kevin put on a shaky smile, looking down at the floor to hide his flushed cheeks. “Let's go home, hyung!”
Kibum groggily nodded, letting the younger lead him home.
-
“Where did the both of you go last night?” Soohyun asked, wiggling his eyebrows teasingly.
“The nearby park.” Kevin replied simply, smiling gently as usual. “Sorry for making you all worried.”
“Well, it would’ve been nice if you left a note, but go wash up and have breakfast with us.” Alexander said, eyeing the zombie-like Kibum with a shake of his head. Kevin then led Kibum away. “Kibum’s like an owl or something.”
“If I were Kevin, I would have gone berserk.” Kiseop shuddered.
“If you were Kevin, you would be madly in love with an idiot that doesn’t know.” Eli corrected intelligently. “That’s why he doesn’t even complain.”
Dongho left himself out of the conversation, plotting to finish Kevin and Kibum’s breakfast before they could reach the table. “Heh-heh.”
-
After three long weeks of busy schedule, U-KISS had a three-day long holiday without schedules. Kevin slept through the first day, much to Alexander’s dismay.
The next day, Kevin was back to his original state, only more awake. When night comes and the clock showed 11.58pm, Kevin didn’t have to think twice to agree to Kibum’s request for a walk.
“You seem really awake.” Kibum laughed, ruffling Kevin’s hair affectionately as they walked side by side.
“I slept a day away yesterday. Now it’s like energy is bursting out from within me, and I have to spend it all.” Kevin shrugged, skipping leisurely as they passed by the usual street to the park two blocks away. “Do you usually go home after the walk and sleep? What if you accidentally fall asleep in the park?”
“I’m usually still very awake after the walk.” Kibum sighed, seeing Kevin pinch his nose suddenly. He smiled briefly, before taking off the jacket he was wearing and then swiftly draping it over Kevin’s shoulder. “You should tell me if you’re cold. Wouldn’t be good for you to keep yourself from sneezing.”
“It usually goes away.” Kevin smiled sheepishly, rubbing his nose and wrapping himself tightly within the jacket.
In the empty park, Kevin and Kibum sat down on a random bench. The older frowned suddenly, checking the time and looking around as if suspicious of something.
“Yes?” Kevin asked, noticing how fidgety Kibum was.
“I don’t know, I’m suddenly overwhelmed with fatigue.” Kibum frowned harder, as if trying to figure out the reason.
“You want to go home now?” Kevin stood up, gesturing at the direction of their dormitory when Kibum pulled him back down with a shake of his head.
“I can’t make it home.” Kibum yawned, lying down on Kevin’s lap and making himself comfortable in the little space the bench had. “Sorry, looks like we’ll have to sleep here ag…”
Kevin looked down at Kibum’s face, lips slightly parted due to his unfinished sentence. He gently pressed Kibum’s lower jaw upwards to close the older’s mouth, rearranging the stray strands of raven hair so they wouldn’t tickle the older in his dreams. Kevin tugged onto the jacket once more so it was tightly around him, feeling Kibum’s scent soothing as always.
The stars were bright as usual, Kevin smiled.
Kibum never knew how important stars were to Kevin because Kevin never told him. Kevin was the sort of person who would take mistakes upon himself and feel depressed about them. Since young, he had this habit and would then sneak his teddy bear out with him to the balcony and watch the stars shine, despite his parents’ reminding him to sleep at ten o’clock sharp.
With two arms tightly wrapped around the little teddy that was about his size, he would count the number of stars and make a wish upon every star. Trusting that the stars heard his soft whispers, because the breeze would carry his messages over, he would then crawl back into bed with a smile, all sadness and worries forgotten.
There was also once he got lost in a forest during a school camp. He was so frustrated with himself and was on verge of tears when he realised the cloudy night sky had cleared, revealing bright stars. He wished upon the five brightest stars and prayed they’d bring him out of this darkness. Then following the twinkling star’s direction, he ended up at the teacher’s campground, safe and unscathed.
Kevin believed these stars were angels that were protecting every human on Earth, if only they looked up and believed in their powers. Most people would listen to him babble since stars were so beautiful, and Kevin had been pleased with the reactions - until Kibum appeared and insulted stars on the second day they met.
Yet since then, his worries were told to the older because Kibum wouldn’t relent until Kevin spoke of whatever was bothering him. If Kevin was sad, Kibum would go to the end of the Earth to find the reason why. Kevin was also not allowed to leave to any single place without informing Kibum, and if it was the toilet, Kibum would protectively follow because Kevin had been harassed before.
Seeing things end up this way, isn’t it safe to say that Kibum is also one of those shining stars?
Only in human form, carefully protecting him. Only more powerful, taking his heart away.
-
Kiseop growled in frustration the next day Kevin and Kibum reached home, a comfortable distance between the both of them. Eli laughed amusedly, waving Kevin’s worries away.
“He’s just experiencing premenstrual syndrome. It’s a new moon last night, anyway.” Eli cackled, while Alexander was secretly relieved he was finally not the one being teased as “suffering from PMS”.
Dongho sneakily slipped away, an idea forming inside his head.
-
With the map Dongho crafted for them, they searched for the exact bench before sitting down under the starry sky.
“I still can’t believe Dongho studied astrology.” Kibum frowned suspiciously, looking at the other piece of paper having the shape of the “heart constellation”, or so the youngest member says. “Is there even such a thing?”
“Well, we’ll find out if we look for it.” Kevin shrugged. “We do have nothing better to do, anyway.”
Kibum sighed in defeat, looking towards his left, while Kevin was looking to his right, causing both their faces to be really close together.
“You should be looking there.” Kevin nudged. “Dongho told me it was going to be on our right.”
“Dongho said it was going to be on our left.” Kibum shook his head. “That silly kid, I think he’s not even sure himself.”
Kevin furrowed his eyebrows but was pretty certain Dongho told him confidently it would be on his right. Silently deciding to just search for the group of stars, he continued staring in that direction.
Kibum had trouble with the stars because there were too many of them, and he was getting dizzy from looking at them with so much concentration. Hoping that if he shifted forward, the stars would look clearer, he did exactly that and scrunched up his nose while squinting his eyes as if that was what he needed to do to find the exact stars.
Kevin flinched at the sudden closeness, and how Kibum’s side profile blocked his line of vision.
“Hyung-” Kevin squeaked, and before he could say another word, Kibum jerked his head towards him.
Kibum blinked at how soft Kevin’s lips were against his own, wanting to pull away but a part of him wanting to deepen this rare contact instead. Kevin shut his eyes tightly in embarrassment, though not breathing and not moving. Kibum’s eyes fluttered close as well, and with hands holding gently onto the two shoulders, the older leaned forward.
With burning cheeks and eyes avoiding each other’s, the two pulled away shyly. It wasn’t as if they were kissing especially forcefully, but the gentleness made them both breathless.
Kevin bit his lower lip nervously, agreeing almost instantly when Kibum asked if he would like to return home, because the awkwardness was a bit unbearable.
Yet when Kibum reached for Kevin’s hand, even their averting gazes couldn’t deny their relationship.
It had, afterall, been written in the stars.
