“Kevin-ah, could you bring the garbage bag out? It’s filled.” Kevin heard his mother shout.
Unfortunately, the voice was not muffled by the closed door of his room.
A sigh, and he opened his mouth. “Not now, mom! I’m finishing up my homework! 5 minutes later?”
“You better!”
Kevin stuck his tongue out at the door.
Furious tapping of the keyboard.
Click.
“Oh! My Girl’s episode’s out!” The fourteen-year-old boy’s face brightened up and quickly clicked the link, bringing him to a new web page.
“Kevin? What are you doing?”
Kevin instantly brought his laptop lid down.
“Homework, noona. Homework.”
-----
“Kevin, you like her, you tell her.” His friend stared at him, wearing an expression that spelt bored, loud and clear.”No use telling me everything great about her.”
Kevin immediately blushed, cheeks turning bright pink. “No, not yet.”
“Yeah. Waiting for Earth to collide into Mars, right?”
“Earth wouldn’t collide into Mars! At least...at least not yet.” Kevin pouted, burying himself into his books.
“I’ll go tell her for you.” A shrug.
Kevin immediately reached out for his friend’s wrist, pulling him back down on the chair beside his own. “NO!”
Everyone turned to stare at him.
Even her.

“I’ll miss you, dad.” Kevin’s lips quivered, even if he tried to control it. “I’ll miss you too, noona.”
Deanna smiled and ruffled her little brother’s hair. “Keep in touch, don’t forget me once you get there.”
“I won’t!” Kevin shook his head furiously, hugging Deanna the next second. “Really, I won’t!”
“I know, just...I don’t know what else to say. Mom’s going with you, so I don’t have to say take care of yourself...and-” Deanna pulled away, fanning her eyes, willing the tears to go away.
Kevin felt his own tears welling up.
“Goodbye, I’ll make you all proud.”
-----
“This is Kevin, his Korean is weak, so help him along the way and make him feel comfortable.” Kevin barely understood what the adult beside him said, but it was fine. Probably the normal things a teacher would say when there was a foreign student. The adult then exited the room.
He turned to the three people who were looking at him. Two kind smiles, one long stare.
The three went back to what they were doing.
Kevin pouted, did the prettiest boy not like him?
“Hello, I’m Kevin.” Kevin advanced towards him.
“I heard.” The other nodded. “Kim Kibum.”
-----
“Don’t cry.”
Kevin found himself pulled into an embrace initiated by an older man. The one he thought didn’t like him.
“Call and tell them. Wish them Merry Christmas. Sing for them.” Kibum suggested while patting Kevin’s back, hoping to never see tears rolling down the younger boy again. “Anything, just don’t cry.”
“I miss them, Kibummie-hyung, I really do.” Kevin said between sobs, tightening his grip around Kibum, the only comfort he can get now.
“I know. I’ll be here if you need me.”
The only thing I want this winter is you.
Dad, Deanna, I miss you.

“This is Alexander.”
A bright smile. The man looked ready to launch into a full-fledged introduction, but the man beside Kevin raised a hand as a signal to wait.
“This is Dongho.”
A small hesitant wave. The kid (how old is he, really?) seemed really shy, biting his lower lip and then quickly looking away.
“This is Soohyun.”
A cool salute accompanied with a welcoming smile. The man plugged his earphones back on.
“That’s Elison.”
A slight bow. The man appeared uncertain, mumbling as if guilty,”What’s up?”
“And Kibum.”
Oh.
Kevin took a step forward and extended his arms.
-----
“Kevin-hyung...” A voice without confidence reached Kevin’s ears. He turned to the only person who would call him “hyung”.
“Yes, Dongho?” Kevin smiled.
The younger boy moved and sat down before Kevin. “I don’t want to let my mother know because she will nag at me. The rest of the hyung-deul would give me disappointed looks...I...”
“What’s that you’re holding?” Kevin raised an eyebrow, trying to understand what Dongho was about to say.
“Could you sign my test paper for me? It’s a small test! It’s okay if you’re not my mother!”
Kevin sighed, knowing the schedules Dongho had.
“Okay.”
-----
“HYUNG!” Dongho ran and pounced on Kevin, who almost lost his balance. “I PASSED! I PASSED!”
Alexander looked mildly amused, snatching the papers from Dongho’s hands. He scrunched his nose and bit back a criticism, deciding Dongho had to cope with his full schedule and thus deserves a praise. “You improved. Not bad, Dongho.”
Dongho grinned cutely and got off Kevin. Kevin ruffled the youngest’s hair, who shook his head to get the hair back into place. Habit of an idol.
“Thank you for not telling them, Kevin-hyung.” Dongho whispered, looking cautiously around in case any other members heard him.
-----
“You’re cold.” Dongho stated, more of a sentence than a question.
Kevin looked at Dongho and smiled, shaking his head. Kibum looked at them over Kevin’s shoulders, interested in the interaction between the youngest two.
“I’m fine.” Kevin said, voice trying to sound normal though his lips trembled. “Are you?”
Dongho rolled his eyes, throwing something around Kevin’s neck as the older one shivered uncontrollably.
A scarf. At the end of it were the initials “D.H.”.
“Made it for you. I wanted to give it to you on your birthday, but well, you ARE cold.”
Kibum sulked.
“I’m cold too!”
-----
“What’s wrong?” Kevin gave the other man, same age as him, a pat on the back and a bottle of mineral water. “You did well.”
“Thanks.” Eli tried to catch his breath, before noticing Kevin looking at him. “Yes?”
“You didn’t reply.” Kevin pouted before shrugging. “It’s okay, you don’t have to tell. Was just concerned.”
“Sorry.” Eli smiled sheepishly. “I’m fine. Just...the usual homesickness.”
Kevin smiled back sympathetically, reaching over to hug Eli, despite his body being sticky thanks to dance practice.
Just like how Kibum helped him with his homesickness, he was going to help Eli with his.
-----
“You’re sticking around Eli way too often.” Alexander wiggled his eyebrows, laughing at his own joke.
Kevin kept quiet, as if waiting for something to happen.
“You jealous?” Kibum teased playfully, understanding Alexander though the older male was speaking in English. Kevin chuckled, shaking his head at Kibum. Kibum immediately attacked him with tickles. “YOU LAUGH AT ME?!”
Eli walked by and grinned at the scene, before speaking up. “Kevin?”
Kibum paused and let Kevin sit up straight to reply. “Hm?”
“Thanks for that.” Kevin briefly saw an envelope from America being waved in his direction.
He returned the smile.
-----
“Are you an idiot?” Eli chided with a frown, but his features immediately softened when Kevin winced. “Are you okay?”
“I’m neither. I’m Kevin Woo, did you forget?” Kevin tried to laugh, but the pain took over.
“If only you stopped when I told you to. Now I’m stuck with carrying you home.” Eli mumbled.
“You owed me one.” Kevin shrugged. “Was only giving you a chance to repay.”
“Don’t be a fool. You made your ankle worse for me repay you? I would have bought you dinner if you wanted repayment.” Eli rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, McDonald’s, isn’t it?”

“Quick, Alexander-hyung.” Kevin frowned as he led the way. “We still have to practice our scripts.”
Alexander sighed, taking bigger strides to keep up with Kevin’s quick pace. “Okay, okay. And you tell me I’m naggy.”
“You are.” Kevin shrugged. “But we’re going to be somewhat late. I still have to introduce you to Isak-noona and vice versa. Don’t forget the crew you’re going to work with from now on. Being late is not a good first impression.”
“ARGH.” Alexander covered his ears for dramatic effect. “Okay! I get it!”
Kevin silently chuckled. “Revenge is sweet.”
“I heard your words!”
-----
“How is it?” Kevin gave Alexander a pat on the back. “Not that bad, right?”
“I think I need to vomit.” Alexander shivered. “It was scary.”
“You did fine. Quite good actually.” Isak smiled, and Kevin grinned at her. “And you made Kevin speak louder. He was putting me to sleep with his gentle voice!”
“Noona!”
“Yes?” Isak replied sweetly, and ended up laughing with Alexander.
“Nice to know that making fun of me is so amusing to the both of you.” Kevin pouted cutely and noticed Alexander was high-fiving Isak already.
Never mind, at least Alexander was loosening up.
-----
“KEVIN!” Alexander shouted, and the younger one slowly blinked into attention.
“Yes?”
“It’s time for Arirang recording! Quick, let’s go already!” Alexander frowned when Kevin took his time to stand up and take his belongings. “I said quick!”
“You can go first.” Kevin shrugged, mildly amused by the oldest’s rush for recording. When did this start? He couldn’t remember, but if there was something Alexander could look forward to every week, then it was fine with Kevin too.
“You’re so annoyingly slow! And you are making use of my kindness. You know I wouldn’t leave without you!”
Kevin shrugged, smiling.
-----
Soohyun sighed, poking Kevin’s side. Kevin turned his head with a questioning expression, cocking his head to a side and waiting for the older man to speak.
“Talk to Kiseop too. Make him feel welcomed. You’re good with these things, no?” Soohyun said, eyeing the unsuspecting new member who was looking around the dance practice room.
Kevin looked at the new member, blinking once before smiling and standing up. He ran towards Kiseop and pulled him away. “That’s Alexander-hyung’s territory!
Kiseop looked surprised at the sudden pull. Kevin grinned like a child, leaning close to the other’s ear.
“He bites.”
-----
“Kevin?” Kiseop started timidly, probably still unable to adapt to the craziness of U-KISS.
Kevin widened his eyes a little in concern. “Kiseop? Is there anything wrong?”
“Actually...yes.” Kiseop nodded nervously, eyeing the chaos happening. Soohyun was rolling on top of Eli and Dongho for whatever reason he had (maybe he didn’t, it didn’t matter), Kibum was about to join in the”fun” and Alexander shook his head at them. Kevin looked at them and smiled, used to the mess.
“Hm?” Kevin asked, hoping a smile would make Kiseop feel better.
Kiseop bit his lower lip.
“Does Alexander-hyung really bite?”
-----
“He doesn’t. He nags.” Kiseop said out loud one day. Everyone stared at him weirdly for a moment.
Dongho turned to Alexander with a smirk. “I think he’s talking about you.”
“YAH! KISEOP-AH!” Alexander screeched out and his voice accidentally broke. “How could you?! Like all these ungrateful kids!”
Kiseop laughed, high-fiving Eli who randomly initiated one. All of them started high-fiving Kiseop, if it could make Alexander more irritated. Kiseop smiled happily at the man he last high-fived.
Kevin, who smiled knowingly.
“Kibum-hyung.” Kiseop whispered quietly to him. “He’s the one who bites.”
Kevin chortled. “He bit you too?”

“Kevin-ah.” Soohyun called out Kevin’s name in Korean, beckoning for the younger one to walk over.
Kevin did, confused as to what the older man would want to say in private. He would normally shout out from where he was sitting, only for Kevin to yell back the answer. “Yes?”
“Don’t...don’t think too much. I was just thinking...” Soohyun licked his dry lips, as if nervous to speak before Kevin. “Do you...have you...ever thought about having your own career?”
Kevin stared at Soohyun’s eyes, before understanding.
“Don’t do that.” Kevin tugged slightly, eyes pleading. “We love you, we need you.”
-----
Kevin told every other member, despite Soohyun’s request. Kevin shrugged, saying he would do anything to keep the other in U-KISS.
“It’s not like I would leave, I was just thinking.” Soohyun grumbled, noticing Kibum’s infamous glare.
“Bad enough.” Alexander shook his head disapprovingly.
Eli patted Soohyun’s shoulders. “Tell us our problems. We can change if we’re annoying you.”
Dongho looked really sad. Kiseop looked like he might cry.
“It’s not you guys, I was purely wondering. Really. And I spoke to Kevin because he had good chances to become a successful solo artist.”
Everyone turned to Kevin.
“Nope, never.”
-----
Soohyun was lounging around when he heard his message tone.
“It’s getting too tough for me...I don’t think I can be a part of U-KISS...”
Soohyun blinked, immediately checking the sender. Kevin.
He instantly called him.
After a few minutes, he hanged up the phone and buried his head into his pillow, punching it violently. The message was a joke, probably from the game segment in Pops In Seoul.
He received another message, not sure if he wants to read it, in case it was another prank or something.
“Understand what I felt when you told me what you did?”
-----
Kibum was jumping around, being unusually active for a man that hadn’t slept enough.
“Have you finally gone crazy?” Dongho raised an eyebrow, swatting the older man’s hand on his shoulder away.
“When are we not crazy?” Alexander raised both his eyebrows, joining Kibum in his insanity.
“Kevin, catch!” Kibum shouted suddenly, throwing Dongho towards the younger boy, who only blinked and felt the impact of Dongho crashing into him. “I said catch! Throw him back.”
Kevin looked away, continuing resting while he can before they return to their practicing.
Kibum sighed. Sometimes, it feels like Kevin was getting further.
-----
Alexander was arranging fan letters in the dance practice room, and everyone applauded his patience. Kevin walked over, curious as to which questions Alexander was going to ask in their first concert.
Alexander noticed his presence, eyeing Kibum (who was strangling Kiseop) before speaking. “You’ve been ignoring Kibum. Something wrong?”
“No.” Kevin frowned. “Am I?”
Alexander shrugged. “Maybe you’re tired, and yes, Eli thinks so too.”
Kevin sighed. “Add this question in.”
“The member Kevin loves the most? I expect the answer to be me~!” Alexander chuckled, acceding to Kevin’s request and writing it down for himself to memorize later.
-----
“Okay, Kevin’s going to pick the person he loves the most.” Eli said like an emcee.
Kevin stepped forward, put his finger up to his chin and faked a thinking expression. He didn’t need to think, he had decided long ago already. All he needed to do was to show.
And so he ran across Dongho and Kiseop from his middle position on the stage to reach Kibum.
Kibum blinked, obviously surprised. His hands were still holding his microphone a second ago, convinced that Kevin grew sick of his presence.
But he hugged back.
Glad some things just never change.

Eighteen birthdays have passed...
At first, I probably loved presents. Things have changed, now I wouldn’t even be angry if people forget my birthday. Gifts? But I have about everything already. My members seem to understand, an unspoken thing between us all. Everyday is like every other day, and somehow, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
There are so much I’ve fulfilled. Dream came true, done parents proud, gained love from many people.
Thank you Father for all these you have given me. I’ll cherish every single one and make you proud too.
Happy Birthday to me...? :)
Love,
Kevin

End :) I don't think it's really good, but that's the most I could do with 100 words haha. And I didn't want to focus to much on the other members so each member had 300 words to play a part in Kevin's "life" haha. Kibum has more because my Kemaru bias was working when I wrote this.
About Nanowrimo, I'm writing a scene that made me almost cry. It's the first time this is happening to me 0.0 I don't know if it's because I'm weird like that, but yeah, it's an angsty scene. Thank you all of you who had been cheering me on~! I can reach 50,000 words, I'm just so sure. I just need another 2,500++ words and I have 4 more days! I hope to finish it today because it's Kevin's birthday though :)
Here's a short preview of the angsty scene. It's kinda sad :(
Soohyun walked out of his door with a family photo they took at the zoo. He held it up for Kevin to see, who watched his second son’s every move. Soohyun slowly pulled the picture apart, tearing it into two.
“Baby, no!” Kevin shrieked, causing Alexander, Kiseop and Dongho to cry harder. “Baby, no! No! Don’t do that!”
Soohyun then tore the two pieces forcefully into many pieces, before throwing it up in the air and walking back into his room, tears rolling down his own cheeks.
Eli started crying, clutching Kevin’s arm tightly. “I don’t want that! I don’t want a broken family!”
