I think Mixit vs. Expressive goes way back to the "before time", those bygone days when LJ was still owned by SixApart (you're really making me reach here). SA had its own quasi-LJ/MySpace service, the dearly departed "Vox", which is why the internal name of the layout is "voxhtml" and there are still references to sixapart in the code. As I recall, the themes that SA already developed for Vox and were ported to LJ were designated as "Expressive", and the "Mixit" heading would be for those developed by and for use on LJ. As to what degree that actually happened, I'm not sure, because SUP eventually took over LJ, the design people were either laid off or stayed with SA, and further development ceased.
