Summary: It’s not always a bad thing when it rains.
Note: Dear
rsk110, I’m really nervous about this so I hope you like it! ♥
Today was definitely not Sakurai Sho's lucky day.
It is his first day of university but his alarm didn't go off. What woke him up was the roar of thunder that had cut through the sky, so loud he bolted straight up. And of course, on the day where he only had 30 minutes to get to school, it happened to also be the day where there was the biggest storm of the year.
So he found himself under his apartment building after getting ready in a record time of six minutes (which also had caused him a few bruises from the battle with the door frame and his favourite cologne bottle currently broken in his toilet when he hit it with his elbow in his haste). He stared dumbfounded at the scenery outside. The rain was so heavy, he could hardly see anything and the wind was so ridiculously strong, he wasn't sure his umbrella would be able to hold out. He was sure the heavy storm could be used as an excuse for him being late but Sho hated being unpunctual so he gripped his umbrella a little tighter, took a deep breath and prepared to battle against wind and rain, literally.
He was barely able to escape the splash of water, jumping to his side and quickly bringing his open umbrella between him and the vehicle, when a car skidded to a halt beside him. He stared, mouth agape as the window lowered.
"Where are you headed to?" the driver shouted, trying to beat the sound of the storm.
"Huh??" Sho's brows knitted in confusion.
"I asked, where are you headed to?" The driver repeated himself.
Sho hesitated before answering "Horiko University"
The car door opened and Sho jumped further back, surprised. The driver bent lower to peer out the door and Sho could see him more clearly. Probably in his early twenties like himself, the driver was sporting long light brown hair that framed his face and from his angle, the man was very handsome.
But being handsome doesn't mean he can’t be a kidnapper. Sho thought as the man started speaking again. “Get in, I’ll drive you there.”
Sho’s eyes widened and before he could respond, the man continued, “You’ll die out there,” he pointed to his umbrella “and with that flimsy umbrella, you might as well take a shower with your clothes on before leaving the house.”
Sho brought the umbrella closer to his body as if trying to protect it from further insults (on a hind note, the move was indeed quite impractical).
“It’s okay, I-“ Sho started but the driver cut him off.
“Hurry up and get in or you’re going to get my car seat wet.”
Sho quickly obeyed, closing his umbrella before hopping into the car, ignoring the part of his brain screaming at him about how dangerous it is.
Surely he can’t do anything to me right? Sho reasoned as he clutched his umbrella tightly and stole glances at the man next to him. Noticing his passenger’s discomfort, the driver looked over and gave a small smile, before reaching over the turn on his radio. The both of them sat in silence, the soft jazz from the radio playing in the background slightly muffled by the sounds of the rain hitting against the car roof.
“Uhm...” Sho started. The driver raised his brows but kept his eyes on the road. “Do you do this often?”
“Do what often?”
Sho fidgeted in his seat. “Like picking people off the streets and offering to drive them to school?”
The man laughed and Sho felt his face heat up at how his heart started to race.
“No actually. You’re the first. I wasn’t really thinking, sorry.” The driver threw him an apologetic smile and Sho couldn’t help but stare at the curve of his lips.
Misunderstanding, the driver quickly added, “I mean, I couldn’t let you march into a storm like this with that”
Sho pouted. “This is a good umbrella!” He retorted.
The driver just laughed and the rest of the journey was spent in silence.

Sho had reached his first class with 2 minutes to spare. After dropping him off by the drop off point and receiving many of Sho’s ‘thank yous’, the driver disappeared into the storm. It was only then did Sho realize that he hadn’t asked for the other man’s name. That was soon forgotten once he caught sight of the huge clock by the wall.
It was three hours later when he found himself following his new friend to the cafeteria. Befriending people wasn’t his forte but he had shyly asked the guy next to him, Nino, if they could have lunch together.
“I’m meeting someone for lunch but you can join us.”
Sho had hesitated, not wanting to bother Nino if he was going to be meeting someone but Nino had stood by the end of the table with his bag slung across his chest, an expectant look on his face.
The both of them entered the cafeteria and found a table. Seeing that he’s friend wasn’t here yet, Nino offered to stay at the table while Sho went ahead to buy his food alone. Returning, Sho almost dropped his tray of soba.
“Mr Driver!!” Sho exclaimed at the sight of the same brown haired guy from this morning that was seating beside Nino.
“Ah.” Mr Driver said before he leaned over to not so subtly whisper to Nino, “That’s him.”
Nino raised his brows. “The guy with the useless umbrella?”
“That is a good umbrella!”

Three months later after the start of school, Sho was spending most of his time with Nino and his friend. He was properly introduced to the brown haired man after meeting him for the first time at the cafeteria and now he spends almost all his breaks with Aiba Masaki. Also, ever since Nino took interest in a sleepy eyed senior from the school's art club, most of the time it would just be Aiba and him together. It works well for Sho because as much as he enjoys Nino's company, he wasn't sure why there was a slight wrenching if his heart whenever he saw the two childhood friends together.
Over time they've gotten closer. Aiba would call him "Sho-chan" and Sho started calling him Masaki occasionally. There wasn’t any verbal agreement but since Aiba lived a street down from Sho, it had also somehow become a routine for Aiba to drive over and give him a lift to school.
They’d spend weekends sprawled over the floor of Sho’s small 1DK, sometimes really putting in effort into studying for their upcoming tests but more often than not, always chatting about this and that and occasionally tackling each other like little boys.
As they spent more time together, Sho could feel something change between them. They were a little more intimate than before and he found himself calling the other man ‘Masaki’ more often. He knew Aiba knew and by the way Sho melted every single time Aiba said his name with such an endearing tone, they both something was bound to happen between them.
It was definitely something they both welcomed.

“Ahhhh!” Sho bolted awake as he noticed the time on his bedside clock. 30 minutes to his first class and he was still in his pajamas. Hopping out of his bed, he grabbed a random hoodie slung over the back of his chair and dashed to the bathroom. He groaned as he ran his shoulder straight into the door frame.
Pausing in his steps and clutching his right shoulder in pain, Sho felt familiarity in his situation; how he was woken up by a loud thunder rather than his alarm clock, how he had gave himself a nasty bruise from running into the door frame and also how he was only left with 30 minutes to get to school. Just like a few months back when he was almost late for the first class ever in university.
“What's next? Is Masaki going to come to my rescue again?” He chuckled to himself before shaking his head in amusement and headed to quickly get changed (minding not to break his favourite cologne). The first day of school was on a Thursday but today was a Tuesday and Aiba didn’t have classes till mid-afternoon.
Sho let out a sigh as a sense of longing pinched his heart. Brushing a hand through his hair, Sho hurriedly headed for the door. He reached over to grab his transparent umbrella without hesitation, though he had been proven on several occasions that Aiba was right and it wasn’t really that good of an umbrella. Nonetheless, he wasn’t going to step down on their little game no matter how many times Aiba teased him about how he should just take a shower with his clothes on if he liked getting wet so much. (Sho had blushed the first time he heard it because a part of his brain interpreted that wrongly).
Dashing out of his front door, Sho found himself screeching to a halt as he spotted a familiar figure in front of him.
“Masaki?” He asked, surprised
“Yo!” Aiba smiled and Sho swore that if it was possible, he would have melted into a puddle of goo.
“Masaki, what, why?” Sho couldn’t form a coherent sentence. His heart was pounding so loudly against his chest.
Aiba stepped forward, pushing Sho back into his apartment. The door clicked shut behind him and Sho found himself unconsciously gripping his umbrella tightly, not afraid that Aiba would hurt him but afraid that if he didn’t hold onto something, he might just collapse from nervousness.
“Sho,” he started and Sho’s heart almost leaped out of his mouth Sho?? Just ‘Sho’????!
“Go out with me.”
Sho’s jaws hit the ground.
“I know you must be wondering why, out of all times now. I know you’re probably confused and I don’t expect you to reciprocate my feelings. But I just wanted to let you know that I’ve thought this over and I can’t deny the fact that I have completely fallen in love with you. Everything you do, everything you are, it just makes me really happy and everything it rains, I think of the first time I met you, the first time I did something I never thought I would and I just-“Aiba rambled but was cut off when Sho pressed his hand against his mouth.
They stared at each other and after what felt like eternity, Aiba felt Sho removing his hand, only to replace it with his lips. Aiba’s breath hitched as Sho’s eyes fluttered close, his hands clutching onto Aiba’s sleeves for support as he tipped his toes a little more to press his lips more firmly against the taller man’s.
Finally breaking apart for air, the both of their faces were flushed red from embarrassment. Then Sho smiled shyly and while bowing slightly, he said, “Please take care of me.”
Grinning back, Aiba leaned back down to steal another kiss. “I’ll take care of you better than your flimsy umbrella can.”
Pulling back, Sho pouted. “It is a-“
“Good umbrella, I know.” Aiba laughed, swooping down for another kiss.
