Title : When You Think About Your Friend A Lot and There's Nothing You Can Do About It
Author :
sa_runna Chapter : 1/3
Pairing : Lavi/Allen
Summary : just like the awfully long title said...
One fine Saturday afternoon at a coffee shop downtown, a red head slowly sipped his warm earl grey tea. Lavi needed caffeine sometimes in his 24 hours a day to support his reading. Reading helped him as much as his innocence helped his job, a future bookman and an exorcist, but a peaceful afternoon was not a time anyone should sip a bitter taste of caffeine so Lavi ordered tea anyway.
“One-san, can I have some nachos, kinda hungry here.” Lavi waved to a fine young lady dressed in a simple khaki long sleeve shirt with white apron. The waitress turned to meet the customer. Her long brown hair tied to one side of her neck. Some of them covered the left side of her face. At the moment their eyes met, the girl startled for a bit and quickly nodded before she vanished to the kitchen.
“well, that’s quite the killer blue eyes, sister, phew. Hope the nachos isn’t the only one I eat today.” The trainee bookman chuckled to himself. He always had something towards blue eyes, especially big blue eyes. It reminded him about the skies and the seas, the scenery he always enjoyed very much.
The coffee shop wasn't a busy one. Their shop was quite a small one, side by side with a florist. Lavi enjoyed the composure, and he decided to visit the coffee shop again sometime. Minutes passed by, the young man flipped pages of the book held on his hand. A slight jazzy music played to accompany customers.
A light clinking sound distracted Lavi from his books. The blue eyed waitress had his nachos ready for him on Lavi’s table. For a second, the boy caught the blue eyes staring at him. Her gaze was deep, and caring, a slight exhaust mirrored on Lavi’s gaze. The second her eyes turned away, Lavi flashed something on his mind. The gaze was very similar to someone’s, but he couldn’t really tell who. Before the waitress started to walk away, Lavi’s left hand held her not to. The action was either caused by the reflex of his ‘is something bothering you?’ and ‘cute one-chan please stay here and drink tea with me’.
“is there anything bothering you, miss?” Lavi decided the modest way to address the fragile looking woman. Her wrist was thin yet very firm. She tried to let herself go with a shocking amount of force Lavi ever thought a petite woman like her could have. The grip immediately came loose and the girl set her feet to leave once again. Before vanishing to the kitchen again, she looked back and shook her head as if saying ‘nothing is bothering me’.
Lavi was left dumbfounded. Questions swirled without any certain answer. This girl definitely left some impression on him. Next week, he would know which coffee shop to go. After he finished his nachos, it was time to go back to the headquarter. He waited the girl to come get the plates back, but another waitress had come to pick them. He left some money on the tray and stood, seeing that there were no sign from the blue eyed girl, he decided to leave when he realized that he stepped on something. Under his foot, lied a withered yellow flower, a tulip perhaps.
Headquarter
“Gramps, which shelf is the flower section?”
“ACHOO! huh? Lavi are you going to be a girl?” the stingy dust from the bookshelf made the bookman sneezed. The old man and his grandson always had their ‘private library time’ together. They ignored the rest of the science division’s blabbering about this and that.
“ow come-on, it is important for medical knowledge you know it.” Lavi covered his hidden motive. It was not entirely bullshit. Medical knowledge about plant was indeed a useful thing to have as a fighter, but up until now, Lavi never interested about such thing. He always called it too girly. That was why the Bookman insulted him earlier. Maybe this was the chance to complete his knowledge as a future bookman.
“third row right shelf. Make yourself comfortable you useless lad, I’ve told you a long time ago to learn about medical plants.”
“thanks, panda-jiji.” The boy immediately vanished to the line of 3 meters high bookshelves. He spent times to search about the tulip. He learned about where it came from, it’s characteristic, and the use of it. In between his search, he stumbled upon interesting facts about plants, some of it made him regret to not knowing them earlier. When he scanned the article, something made him remember about the girl. Something girlish enough to make him questioned about himself.
“yellow tulip is the image of one sided, hopeless love. Oh the hell Lavi, you really are turning into a girl. Why would I care about something like that. I like to flirt but I’m not a romantic.” He mumbled to himself.
“Who is the romantic one, Laviii?!” a shocking high pitched voice came from under and made him lose balance. A loud thud came after a harsh impact between the floor and Lavi’s butt. It was normal to climb a ladder to get a book on the top shelf and Lavi fell from it.
“L-Lenalee, what is it with you, it huuurts!” Beside him, Lenalee stood covering her mouth. She felt a slight guilt for making her nakama fell from that height. She mumbled a couple “I’m sorry” from her mouth. She was not expecting the vigilant exorcist to be shocked over something like that.
“wow, that must be hurt, the way you fell. We just want to bring you to dinner Lavi.” A husky voice came from behind the exorcist girl. The owner of the voice was a white haired young exorcist. His height wasn’t that much different from the girl Lenalee.
“Allen you bastard don’t just stare, need a help here.” The boy Allen immediately stretched his hand, reaching for the other boy’s hand. For a brief second, Lavi felt something when he grabbed Allen’s helping hand. He felt something similar happened before. Allen’s help made Lavi stood back on his feet. He decided not to fuss about anything and came to dinner with his two friends.
Cafeteria
“Jerry-san, I’ll have a potato cream soup, bitter ballen and omelet for appetizer, tenderloin steak, grilled salmon, and nashigoren for main menu and for dessert mango pancake and banana split will be enough.” The young boy Allen’s appetite always made Lavi felt nausea. The way Allen ordered his food was like a waiter mentioning a restaurant menu for Lavi. He always ordered his food after Allen so that he could pick something from Allen’s dinner list.
“Grilled salmon and mango pancake for me, jerry-san.” The red head ordered while sighing.
“anything for you two, muffins…”
Minutes later, Lavi’s grilled salmon, Lenalee’s spaghetti carbonara and Allen’s huge pile of foods arrived. Allen’s eyes sparkled like a little boy got his first cool robot model when he ate. Lavi and Lenalee couldn’t help but smiled at their friend’s happiness.
“Hey, Allen-kun, do you really starve that much? You’re not in a mission and you still have to eat that much?” Lenalee’s speech slowed down Allen’s eating pace. He deliberately mumbled some random reason with his mouth full so anyone couldn’t hear him clearly. Lavi laughed at the scene where some of the food Allen ate spurred out when he tried to talk.
“It is obvious if I smell you, you reeked of food!” Lavi joked while sniffing to the boy beside him to prove his sentences. He expected something close to the prove while at the other hand, Allen smelled very differently. “Hey wait, you don’t smell like food, you smelled like grass, no, flower. Are you regularly rolling in a flowery garden, hahaha” Allen stopped eating at Lavi’s words. His expression showed uneasiness. He laughed a bit and then replied .
“don’t you have anything else to say Lavi, you make me sounded like a girl.” He said.
“hey, so what if you’re a girl! That’s nothing embarrassing about it!” as a proud woman, Lenalee stood up for her folks. She hated gender discrimination. Lavi felt that his joke drifted too far up to made a girl mad, he think of another joke to melt the situation.
“oookay guys, another question. Hey Allen, considering the amount of food you ate, how many times you shit a day? Haha” Lavi expected anyone to laugh, and the only laugh he got was from a few finders around him, not a single chuckle from his companions. The white haired boy stopped his entire motion for a few second, his face was looking down.
“err, Allen?” Lavi confused from his friend’s reaction tried to pat him in the shoulder before the short guy really snapped.
“YOU STUPID LAVI!!” some of the food spurted right onto Lavi’s face. Allen’s face covered with his bangs.
“YOU’RE SO NOISY, BAKA MOYASHI!” a harsh insult came from a long haired man across their table. Kanda Yuu stood carrying his plate of soba to move to a quieter place to enjoy his favorite meal, still murmuring insults in his foul mouth. Allen too, at some point was disturbed by his long live enemy, Kanda, decided to end his meal. The boy quickly ran to his room, leaving Timcanpy the golden golem to finish his remaining food.
“You really are a very un-sensitive man, Lavi. And definitely not a romantic.” The girl wearing a doubtful face in front of him was ready to leave him too. She had finished her dinner anyway. And so, a single phrase from the future bookman had driven the three almighty exorcists mad and leave their dinner.
“Am I a public enemy or what?”
Five days later…
Allen and Krory had just arrived at the head quarter after a mission in Prague. They got quite exhausted. they finished dinner quickly and took a shower to remove dirt and akuma blood from their body. The two of them took a break at an open balcony to dry their wet hair. The short boy got a scratch on his bare neck from his previous action. He wore a pair of black pajama pants and left his upper body topless because he couldn’t really take the heat from summer.
“Hey Allen, Kuro-chan, how’s mission?” Lavi came out to meet them. Head also wet from the shower. The night sky of summer could be seen clearly from the balcony. Lavi himself also went for a mission with his grandpa, but he had arrived one day sooner.
“Great Lavi-kun. We retrieve an innocence successfully. Ne Allen-kun?” the over polite Dracula suggested his companion to verify his answer. The small guy only nodded and muttered a quiet “uh-uh”.
“Hey Allen, are you still mad at me, dammit? It was just a joke okay. Kuro-chan please help me.” Krory not knowing the exact problem, tried to help Lavi because of his kind heart.
“yes, Allen-kun. As humans, we should forgive each other. Even the sky still shines upon us who ruined the nature. We must.. forgive… anyone… even akuma… ELIADEEEEEEE… huhuhu” with that, Krory marched to his own room, probably bringing a bucket to collect his own tears.
“I better get going too.” Said the young boy, but the other boy promptly stopped him from leaving.
“wait, can you please stay here? Don’t wanna waste this full moon. Haha.” His grip loosened, the white haired boy wasn’t going to run anymore. He rested his hand on the balcony. The rabbit boy was right. It was a full moon without any dark clouds surrounding it. It was very pretty.
“great isn’t it, the way it shines?” Lavi murmured.
“yes…” this was the first time after six days Lavi ever found Allen smiling in front of him. The image recorded in Lavi’s perfect memory, and probably would stay there a little longer.
“you’re smiling Allen, that’s good! You know, you’re my only friend of the same age here. The science division is always busy, the finders are paying too much respect for us they avoid us, Kanda is allergic to the word ‘friend’ and Lenalee is a girl for that matters. So, you’re the only one whom I can talk to as I am. If you mad at me, I’ll have to talk to my gramps… again… that sucks…” Lavi pouted. That made Allen chuckled ad decided to give up at being mad at Lavi.
“Okay Lavi you got me. The same thing happens to me. But, it’s your fault at the first time. You have to make it up for me! Bring me midnight snack from the kitchen!”
“You gotta be kidding me kid, don’t be such a girl. who’s the one abusing Jerry with his appetite, huh? Huh?” Lavi rustled the younger boy’s wet hair and strangled his neck playfully. Their cheerfulness had come back. A light laugh came from the two of them and they continue to talk about whatever it was, be it their missions, gossips about higher ups or even clue about Cross Marian’s whereabouts.
“Hey moyashi, have you ever fallen in love?” Lavi’s sudden question surprised the boy beside him.
“it’s Allen. Umm, basically I haven’t, but I have. In some perspective I haven’t, but I definitely have. Wha-what is the matter Lavi, you always saying you’re my big bro you should’ve more experience about this kind of things than me.” Allen looked up. He couldn’t really look at the older boy’s face because of his eye patch but he could feel the seriousness. A little helpless look must adorn the boy’s fine face.
“you know, sometimes I act like a frickin smartass when I actually don’t know about anything. It corresponds with the fact that someday I will become a Bookman. I don’t have the luxury to be stupid. Only to a guy like you I can reveal my true self. Because I think we’re so much alike.” He looked back at Allen. The natural lighting provided him to look at the other boy’s clearly. Those big blue eyes looked back at him with such a gaze. Allen’s painful past gave him a deeper meaning of live than the average 15 years old. His eyes could see both human’s and akuma’s real emotion he could sympathized with those hateful bastards. The previous five days mission made the lid became heavier and a slight dark eye bags formed under his eyes because the lack of sleep.
“Allen you reminded me of someone. I just met her once, but I felt something different about her. I’m not saying that I love her. I kinda like her maybe. One faithful encounter isn’t gonna make anyone loves another. Right? Hhh… okay I’m blabbering like I like her. Very much for that matters. Do you think I’m weird?” The boy in eye patch asked.
“no, you’re not weird. She is a girl, and you’re a boy. What is weird in a boy and a girl falls in love? If you want to see something weird, it was me. Even a newborn baby can see I was weird with the way my hair stand, and the ‘cursed tattoo’ on my left cheek. Hahaha. You’re not weird. At all.” Allen said that with his eyes saw straight to the horizon in front of him.
Lavi always saw Allen more than just 15 years old. He was not ordinary, everyone noticed that. But somehow it didn’t show any wickedness at all, at least for him. It was the only one chance in your lifetime you got to know a guy like Allen, and Lavi wouldn’t waste it. His big hands found their way to Allen’s bare shoulder and forcefully turned the boy to face him.
“weird is not always bad. You are different but so what? You can be anybody, throw your life to a bottomless pit of uselessness. But only you who can be ‘YOU’. And about your physical state, that hair, that eye, that arm, and all of those scars, they may be not ordinary, but they are cool at some point. Just wait patiently until you find someone who calls you beautiful. Heheh” Lavi grinned. He felt like he was the cool big brother who conducted a cool big brother’s speech to his little brother.
Allen laughed and smiled a painful smile. Even as a sibling, as long as he could be with his ‘cool big brother’ he could move forward. He felt like Lenalee.
