Chapter 2: In which present confuses Sho more than past
Aiba looked up at the huge office building in front of him. Suddenly he became uncertain, was it a good idea to come here? But then he decided if he forced out Nino where Ohno works and come all the way here, it worth a chance…
He walked into the big entrance hall and cautiously stepped to the counter.
“Ano… Excuse me, I want to speak with Sakurai Sho-san…” he told to the lady sitting behind the counter.
“I’m sorry, but Sakurai-san has a meeting right now. Do you have an appointment to meet him?” the woman asked automatically.
“Ehm… No, I don’t have but…” Aiba started confused.
“Then I’m sorry but I can’t let you in” the woman cut in.
Aiba looked at the small package in his hands bitterly. He didn’t know why but his eyes filled with tears as soon as the woman forbade him to meet Sho.
“Wakarimashita…” he muttered disappointed. “Then… could you please give this to Sakurai-san?” he asked gripping on his hope and put the small package on the counter.
The woman eyes the teary eyed Aiba and his poorly wrapped present for a minute and felt pity for him.
“Okay” she gave in and picked up the package.
“Hontou? Arigatou gozaimasu!” Aiba smiled grateful.
The woman just nodded then shook her head when Aiba run out of the building.
Sho rubbed his eyes tiredly and collapsed into his chair. He thought this meeting will never end! He put his head on the desk and closed his eyes, determined to give himself two minutes of resting before start to look through the notes for his new project. But as soon as he closed his eyes, the pictures of yesterday came back to him and he sit up straight immediately.
Yesterday when he arrived home he was dead tired so he just laid down on his bed and fell in deep, dreamless sleep that instant. Then today he was on that meeting till now and it needed his full attention.
But now he remembered the meeting Aiba but he felt insecure, was that really happening or he just dreamt again like so much other things related to Aiba…
“Doushiou? Doushiou?” Sho paddled on his desk as he expects to find something under a paper what will prove him that yesterday really happened.
But his hectic paddling was interrupted by a knocking.
“Shitsureishimasu…” the young woman said as she entered. “Excuse me, Sakurai-san, to bother your work, but this was sent to you while you were at the meeting” she explained and put a poorly wrapped box on the desk.
“What is this?” Sho asked frowning as he eyes the package.
“I don’t know… A young guy brought it… He wanted to meet Sakurai-san but when they didn’t let him in, he just asked us to give this to you” she said and shrugged.
“Is that so?” Sho didn’t understand anything about it.
The woman bowed then left without saying anything more.
Sho eyed the box for a few more minutes before he gathered up enough courage to open it. He didn’t expected it to be a bomb in it or something; he wasn’t that important person in the office to get something like that. But still… It isn’t too calming thought that strangers leave shady packages for you at your workplace! But… this was too small to contain anything harmful, right?...
When he finally opened it, he burst out laughing. First because it was ridiculous to worry about something innocent like this; second because here was the proof the yesterday did happened. In the box there was a frame with adorable puppies on it and a small card.
‘Sakurai-san!
I wanted to apologies one more time for what happened yesterday. Shibu-chan really not a bad puppy, she’s just too hyper sometimes… So, please don’t be mad and I hope you’ll like my present!
Aiba Masaki’
Sho looked at the frame once more. It was… tipically Aiba…
“Irasshaimase!” Aiba called when he heard the small bells twinkling hanging above the door.
Only five minutes left till closing time and everybody might get annoyed that someone wonder in the shop just now. But Aiba doesn't. He loved his job so he didn’t mind if he had to work overtime. It just means that he can spend more time with his beloved animals.
“Konban wa, Aiba-chan!” Sho greeted him smiling when Aiba finally appeared.
“Oh, Sakurai-san, konban wa! What can I help you?” he asked smiling wide.
“Actually… I just wanted to thank you for this…” he said and pulled out the frame from his bag. “I like it…” he added.
“Oh…” Aiba didn’t know why he started to blushing. “Ureshii… You must find it odd, but… I thought it’s the least… after Shibu-chan broke the other yesterday…” Aiba explained blushed.
Sho smiled; Aiba really didn’t change at all.
“I wondered how did you know where do I work…” he said.
“Ah… that…” Aiba giggled a bit. “From Nino-chan. He was here yesterday when we came back and he said you work with Ohno-san… You know, he and Ohno-san…” Aiba just grinned but didn’t finish the sentence. “Oh, by the way, Nino is my best friend…” he added as an explanation.
“So desu ka?” Sho felt his heart ache at this.
‘I was your best friend; your lover… Why don’t you remember me?’ he asked in thought.
“But you shouldn't be bothering yourself to come here thank it…” Aiba said as he checked the cages.
“Ah… well… I was around here and I didn’t have anything to do…” now it was Sho’s turn to blush. Actually, he had a lot of things to take care of but he left everything tomorrow so he can come here before the shop closes and Aiba goes home…
“Well, if you really didn’t have anything to do… would you mind eating dinner with me?” Aiba asked Sho smiling.
Sho was surprised by the sudden invitation. Even if he knew everything about Aiba, the other guy still didn’t show any sign of remembering him. And who the heck ask out someone dinner whom he met only once? (next to Aiba, of course…)
“Ehm… sure…” he said finally uncertain.
“Yay! If we hurry, we still can reach the next train!” Aiba said keenly; he quickly pulled off his apron and put it on its place behind the counter.
“The train?” Sho asked confused.
“Yeah” Aiba said and baffled Sho out the shop. “To Chiba… My parents live there; we’ll eat dinner with them…” Aiba explained while he closed the shop, then he simply took Sho’s hand and started to run toward the station.
When Sho recovered from the first shock over Aiba just invited someone whom he just met the day before to eat dinner with his parents; he realized that it could be handy for him.
He remembered Aiba’s mother; she was a small, charming, nice lady. She spoiled Sho just as much as her own son. Maybe she’ll tell him why Aiba doesn’t remember him… But till that…
They were on the train and surprisingly there was silence between them. (Just because Aiba was busy e-mailing to Nino on his phone)
“So… you wanted to be a veterinarian?...” Sho asked with ease when Aiba put away his phone.
Aiba looked at Sho confused for a minute. He didn’t remember telling this to Sho; but again, it wouldn’t be the first time when he forgets what he did said.
“Did I mention it?” he asked back smiling.
“Yeah…” ‘once before all this mess…’ he added in thought.
“You know what, Sho-chan?” the nearly twelve years old Aiba asked sitting in the swing while the older boy drove it higher and higher.
“What?” Sho asked back and stopped the swing to listen to the younger boy.
“I decided!” Aiba announced determined.
“Okay, but what?” Sho asked again.
It was always like this. Sho had to ask four or five times in a row in order to know, what Aiba wanted to say at the beginning.
“When I grew up, I’ll become a veterinarian. And I’ll run a shelter where I can take in all those puppies and kitties and other pets what those bad people through out!” Aiba said passionately.
“Jaaa… I’ll become an architect and I’ll build the biggest, nicest, best shelter what your pets can wish” Sho said smiling.
“Hontou?” Aiba turned back his head and looked up at Sho.
“Hontou” Sho nodded smiling. “Yakusoku” he added and stuck out his pinky finger.
Aiba laughed and hook his pinky finger with Sho’s…
