Prologue:
“Hey, this was good!”
“Yeah! Ninomiya sempai, you’re the best!”
“We will definitely win the match next weekend with you!”
“Then we go for Koushien in the summer!”
The boys laughed happily, full with confidence, the way teenagers can do only.
“And after we won Koushien, I’ll be a pro before even graduation!” Nino said confidently.
“Just don’t forget about us, Ninomiya sempai!”
“Don’t forget about who?” Nino pretended and the boys just laughed again, just as Nino did. “Then, see you tomorrow!”
Nino waved goodbye to his club mates before got on his bike. He cycled to the family restaurant where he worked as a part timer three times a week ever since his father left the family almost two years ago…
“Tadaima” Nino exclaimed as he stepped in the small apartment where he lived with his mother and sister. “Nee-chan is sleeping already?”
“Okaeri, Kazunari!” his mom responded as the boy entered the kitchen. “Hai” she answered and smiled at him but Nino saw the worry in her eyes. “Are you hungry? I’m sure you are! I’ll make you something quickly…”
“I ate at the restaurant from the left-over…” Nino lied smoothly.
“Ah… okay…” his mom said.
“What’s wrong, mom?”
The woman smiled sadly.
“It’s nothing…” she tried but Nino cleared his throat and looked at her sternly. She sighed. “The landlord… he raised the fee… again…” she admitted.
‘That old bastard!’ Nino thought angry. It was the third raising in the past half year. Not that the apartment would worth it but they couldn’t find anything else till now. But soon they’ll have to something or else…
“Gomen, Kazunari. I should not bother you with these things…” his mom apologized.
“Don’t say that! As the man in this family, I have to take care of you and sis!” Nino said firmly. “Oh, here! My payment for this week…” he added handing the envelope to his mom with a soft smile on his lips.
“Thank you, Kazunari…” she accepted it feeling guilty for relying so much to his son.
“I’m going to do my homework. You look tired, mom, go to sleep, okay?” Nino said gently kissing his mother on the cheek then sat to the low table in the living area putting out his books…
“Ninomiya sempai! You missed practice, again! But the match is coming on tomorrow!”
“Sorry, guys, I’m not into baseball any more…” Nino shrugged uninterested then left his shocked (ex)club mates gaping on the schoolyard.
He wasn’t happy to tell that lie to his friends cause like Hell he wasn’t interested in baseball! But his family needed him and he’d do anything for the people he loved…
“Kazunari? Where are you going so early in the morning? On Saturday…” his mom asked when he caught his son getting ready to leave bearly after dawn.
“Work. Tanaka-san asked if I can help out on the weekends. I said yes” Nino answered tying his shoelaces.
“And what’s the box for?” his mom asked peeking into the big cardboard box next to his son.
“I know a guy who pays for these…”
“But… these are your favorite games…! You can’t give up everything for us!”
“Kaa-chan! These are just games! No big deal…” Nino insisted though his mom was right, he liked these games but it wasn’t important at the moment. “I’m going then. Ittekimasu!”
“Itterasshai, Kazunari!”
A few hours later someone was knocking on the door and the most unexpected visitor stood there when Nino’s mom opened the door.
“Hello, Yuriko! I need to talk to you…”
When Nino arrived home late that night his mom was waiting for him in the living room.
“Kazunari, we have to talk…” she started, motioning Nino to sit down.
“What is it, mom? Something happened? You’re scaring me…”
“Your uncle came here earlier…”
Nino raised an eyebrow at this news. He knew they had and uncle but he hardly remembered his face or anything about him cause he never interacted with them. He was always busy with his company…
“He would help us but for this he said he wants you to inherit his business since he has no child. He’d take you in and take care of your education and everything…”
Nino said nothing at these.
“You don’t have to do it!” his mom misunderstood his silence and was afraid she angered her son. “We’ll tell him when he comes tomorrow… We’ll find another way to… Where are you going now?” she asked slightly panicked when Nino stood up still saying nothing.
“Packing” he answered.
“Packing?” his mom echoed his words frightened. “Kazunari, I know you are angry for this but we’ll find another way you don’t have to leave…”
“Mom!” Nino turned back to her with a gentle smile on his lips. “I’m packing to go with uncle tomorrow. I’m not angry or anything. This way you and sis can be at ease. She’ll be able to go whichever university she wants and you can also stop working and just take care of her and the home. I’ll be okay too. Who knows? Maybe I’ll find what I need there too…” Nino said smiling at his mother…
The next day come and Nino want to start his new life as the heir of one of the biggest idol companies. At that time he had no idea what was waiting for him on the road he just started to walk on…
