1999, summer
“Majide?”
“Really?”
“Hontou?”
“No kidding?”
The four boys gathered at the office of their boss mutually shared the feeling of shocked happiness. After all, Johnny-san offered their dream on silver plate, wasn’t he? The boss pretended he didn’t hear the boys interrupting words.
“As I said, with a fifth member included, you will form the band who’ll sing the supporting song for the upcoming volleyball championship” Johnny repeated calmly. “Your debut will be announced next month. You go on a training camp till that where you’ll have to learn the song and the choreography. Also your fifth member will join you there. Departure’s on the next week. That’s all”
With this the boys - Sakurai Sho, Aiba Masaki, Ninomiya Kazunari and Matsumoto Jun - were dismissed from the office.
As soon as the door was closed behind them Jun, Nino and Aiba jumped into each others’ arms cheering happily and after a few minutes, Aiba dragged Sho - who was standing next to them slightly awkward - into their small celebrating circle.
Their dream will definitely come true!
“Hawaii! We really came to Hawaii!” Aiba cried happily as he kept jumping around the others - when he wasn’t running round and round in the room to see everything in the room or out the window all in the same time. “You think they let us go out to the beach?” he asked looking at the other boys.
“I hope so” Nino grinned at his best friend.
Jun on the other hand seemed to not even hear his question cause he was too busy with staring at Sho with idolizing eyes.
“Sakurai-kun?”
Aiba turned his eyes to the oldest for his opinion but before Sho could answer, their room’s door opened and their manager escorted another boy in.
“This is Ohno Satoshi-kun. He’ll be the fifth member of Arashi” the man said. “Don’t forget the press conference tomorrow!” the man said reminding before leaving.
“What?” Ohno looked at the now closed door when the manager left. They said he’ll just have to teach choreography to the juniors! He heard nothing about debuting! After he managed to escape the debuting with the band now called V6…
“Ehm… Hello?...” Ohno waved his hand awkwardly before sitting down at the nearest corner.
“Ohno Satoshi!...” Aiba and Nino whispered in awe. Even Jun turned his idolizing gaze from Sho to Ohno for a minute while, Sho himself walked to Ohno with a friendly smile on his face.
They all heard about the singing-dancing prodigy still it was obvious why they react like this since he was kind of a mysterious figure in among the Tokyo-juniors since Ohno stayed in Osaka most of the time so they barely knew anything about him…
Suddenly a wide grin appeared on Aiba’s face.
“Tomorrow!” he breathed out delighted.
‘Our future starts tomorrow...’
2004, summer
Aiba sat at the table in their greenroom with a block of paper and a bunch of paperballs in front of him. Frowning he tipped his pen to his lips, thinking deeply.
5 years… 5 years passed since their debut…
A faint smile appeared on the tall singer’s lips for a second but soon after the frown returned to his face.
A lot of things happened since then. Good things but bad things as well… The worst was when Ohno, Sho and Nino all wanted to quit… He was really scared at that time. He was too scared to even ask, beg for them to change their mind, to stay in Arashi! But his silent prayers reached God or his friends’ heart but in the end they stayed… Then just as he thought every thing will be fine… his stupid lung had to collapse!... Unconsciously he touched his chest where the scar was…
An annoyed pout changed the frown on his face. Why was it him who had to cause trouble to the others just when things started to turn for the brighter?...
“Hey, Aiba-chan! What’s with that pout?” Sho asked dropping on the seat next to him.
“Eh?” Aiba blinked cutely at the rapper, waking for his thoughts.
Sho laughed at him before turned his glance at the scattered papers all over the table.
“What are you working on?” he asked curiously.
“Ah! Betsuni…” Aiba cried out gathering his stuff from the table.
“You’re awfully secretive recently…” Nino commented walking up behind them.
“I’m not secretive!” Aiba protested while stuffing his papers in his bag at his feet.
“Then what would you call it?” the gamer asked crossing his arms over his chest, looking at his friend challenging.
“It’s a… surprise?” Aiba asked back unsure.
“You mean we can’t know it before hand cause you want to surprise us, right?” Nino asked back confirming.
“Yeah!” Aiba answered confidently.
“Which means you are secretive!” the shorter member said victorious.
Sho couldn’t hold back his laughter when Aiba started pouting again.
“Nino, stop bullying Aiba-chan!” Ohno said on his silent, leader-tone.
“Ha~i!” Nino said and went back sitting next to Ohno, snuggling into his side and took out his DS to play again.
“Thank you, Riidaa!” Aiba looked beaming at the older member…
“So… now, Aiba-san wrote a letter to the other members…”
“No way! Really?”
Suddenly Aiba felt really anxious, despite this whole letter thing was his very own idea. Still, anxious or not, he wanted the others to know what he thinks cause probably he wouldn’t be able to boost up enough courage for this at another time…
It was hard to read once he himself broke down crying. It was hard to even see what he wrote!... But he kept going on…
“Matsujun! For being the one who thinks about Arashi more than anyone… Arigatou!... Nino! For being able to read the atmosphere and being able to bring up our spirits… Arigatou!... Sho-kun! For holding together such a messy group of five different people… Arigatou!... And at last, Riidaa, Ohno-kun! Even though you’re anything that is like a leader but your presence and your personality has always made one feel the warmth. Arigatou! You’re very dependable, Riidaa!...”
Once he finished reading, Aiba went back to his spot next to the others. He tried hard to stop his tears and wipe his them off his face completely.
“Our Aiba-chan, ne, he gets sick easily. So he always worry that he might be giving too much trouble to us. We don’t mind, this is Arashi” Nino said smiling.
“He said he has giving us trouble during that period but in fact he must be the one who had it the most painful at that time” Sho added when he could fight back his tears finally…
A part of Aiba found it stupid that he started to cry too. He was still too absorbed in his thoughts so he would’ve missed the cue for going on stage if Jun didn’t put his hand on the small of his back escorting him in the right direction…
Sho reached his hand out toward him on the stage. Aiba smiled at the rapper through his tears as he took Sho’s hand and the next minute he found himself in the tight embrace of the older man.
“Masaki… For being Arashi’s soul… Arigatou!” Sho whispered into his ear…
2012, winter
“Guys, you’re insane!” Aiba told to his bandmates in the backstage while they changed for the encore.
He still didn’t know if he should cry or laugh. He should’ve expected something like that though. After how they surprised Sho for his birthday… Still he felt really touched remembering his bandmates in those Chinese outfits, singing his solo… A hiccup broke from his throat…
“Oh, come on, don’t start crying now!” Nino said looking at him with a teasing smile.
“Your face was hilarious though…” Jun added.
Aibe sniffed a little and whipped his face quickly. The other four men laughed at him.
“For your information, Nino, I’m not crying! And Jun-pon, I was… just surprised, that’s all!” the tallest member said blushing.
“But we’re happy you liked our little surprise, Masaki…” Sho said putting his hand on his friend’s shoulder and smiled at him.
“You’re just happy you could show off your legs in skirt once again…” Aiba teased back his friend grinning at Sho who blushed a little at this.
“Shut up!” he shot back and quickly returned changing clothes.
Nino and Jun laughed at them.
“Okay, hurry up and finish up this concert!” Jun ordered and headed to the door followed by the others.
“Hey, Aiba-chan!” Ohno called after him when just the two of them were left in the changing room.
“What is it, Riidaa?” he asked looking back at the shorter man, smiling but curiously.
“Happy birthday!” he said with a sleepy smile then quickly tiptoed to peck Aiba’s cheek. “Thank you for being a member of Arashi…” he said smiling then hurried after the others with the grinning Aiba right behind him…
