wig in a box is the hedwig and the angry inch tribute album (if you ain't seen the play or movie, please rectify that immediately). proceeds from its sale go to the hetrick-martin institute, which is apparently the home of the harvey milk school: a wonderful cause.

and i love the hedwig soundtrack. but i only love about half of this album. the half of it that i love is well worth it, sure.

but.

the bob mould version of "nailed" is just unacceptable. i don't know what he was thinking, but it apparently had nothing to do with quality. i'm not categorically against techno or remixes or anything like that, but i am definitely against sub-par everything. i don't care of you're bob fucking mould. you don't get to pull that crap. someone needs to make him accountable. especially after all the work he put into making the music more rockin' for the movie. jeezy creezy.

spoon does a version of "tear me down". frankly, i could give a shit about spoon. i don't care that everyone thinks they're the greatest thing since that one good faint album. i just don't care. they've given me nothing to invest in, including, sadly, this song. sure, it's not offensively bad. but i just don't care (the intro by stephen colbert, however, is totally bitchin').

the yoko ono/yo la tengo version of "exquisite corpse" though, is really great. it's the way she sings it. she's got this middle-aged womanish, stacatto fragility in her voice that doesn't rock as much as i originally thought that "exquisite corpse" should; but it works, well, exquisitely - like if your mother-in-law decided to do some whip-its and sing a sex pistols song. it's just somehow really nice. comforting. makes you want to dance with a puppy.

the new stephen trask (everyone take a moment of silence, please, wherein we all want to fuck stephen trask)/john cameron mitchell song is the sort of song that's so beautiful, you're positive you've heard a million times before (you know, in the good way).

oh, and the sleater kinney version of "angry inch" would maybe be passable if it weren't for fred "i'm too busy being an uber-stereotypical flamer to evoke even an ounce of emotion when singing" schneider. the rest of the song isn't great, but he just latches on with his manicured fingernals and drags it that extra three levels down to sucksville.

the cyndi lauper version of "midnight radio" is so achingly gorgeous that i can't type while it's playing.

so now i'll stop.
