A Tough Job

It takes Clark a moment to read over the edits Lois has made to his first ever obituary for the Daily Planet. Not for lack of speed, but because not a single word of her edits make any sense. For that matter, they aren't even spelled right! It's like some kind of puzzle that he has to decode before he can move forward in his quest to find the treasure or save the day or something.

Glancing at her over their desks, he can't help a smile, as she's typing furiously with a pencil clenched between her teeth and her brow furrowed with concentration. He almost can't believe the way she's changed since he's been out of the loop for so long. No longer worrying about getting the headline more than uncovering the truth, her mind on her work and not on chasing fantasies and men in tights - which Clark peripherally hopes might one day work out for him, however he decides to go about his rescues - when there are more important stories to go after. She's like a tightly focused tornado.

But she can't spell worth a damn.

He almost can't suppress the chuckle threatening to burst forth at the thought when she looks up from her work.

"What?" she snaps, eying him dangerously.

"Hmm? Oh, nothing..." he deflects, looking down at his marked up obit again.

"Whatever," she mutters, and he knows she's focused on her work again by the clacking of computer keys.

His mind back on the puzzle of her edits, he crosses out several punctuation notes that make no sense, and untangles the meaning of another. What the heck does she mean 'He was suceded by...'? That's gotta be 'he was preceded in death by his wife... and is survived by... he realizes as he marks out another note. Really, it's worse than a cryptogram and a Rubik's Cube put together! Goodness only knows what her own articles look like.

And at that thought, he cringes, knowing somehow that he'll be the one to have to proof her work from now on, and not quite comprehending how she made it this far. But he chuckles again, knowing he wouldn't have it any other way. Lois may have terrible spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills, but her new found focus and determination is just gorgeous, and he can't help but feel a bit honored to be working by her side, such as that might play out. Even if he does wind up needing to delegate proofing her articles. Thank God for copy editors... I don't think I'll be able to do this job alone!
