Ficlet: Spite (Superman Returns)
An evil plot bunny ravaged my ankle when I read trascendenza's latest Vocabulary Soup Challenge. The word prompt: Exanimate. Here's the outcome:

Spite
Clark watched as the spiteful fire dimmed in Luthor's eyes, the hate bleeding forth in one final hemorrhage as the madman lunged forward, his knees wobbling and arms giving way beneath him. Luthor's hands came forward, blindly scrabbling toward the injured Kryptonian in a wave of rage.
Lex roared with fury as he reached for his nemesis. It wasn't enough that the explosion had blasted Superman with enough kryptonite to shred his immaculate visage. No, Lex wanted him to die, at his hands. “Die!” he choked, straining forward even as the muscles in his arms went slack and his body sagged to the charred ground.
Breathing heavy with the pain of the deadly mineral, Clark shrank back from the maniac's reach, seeing the enraged light leave Luthor for good. He listened for the other man's heartbeat, his breath, anything, over the white noise of the pain.
Nothing.
Clark shuddered, staring at the exanimate psychopath, the body of a mass murderer sprawled before him, still seeming to reach for him with dead hands.
It was over. It was finally over.
