Thirsty Work

Rummaging through Pamela's house a month after she died hadn't been on their list of 'fun things to do', but here they were anyway, searching for something -- anything -- that could help them in the fight to stop the apocalypse. At this point, with things going so badly, even a hastily jotted down note about her 'talk' with Castiel would have felt like a major win.

An hour or so into their search, neither of them had come up with so much as a snippet or an angel feather, and Sam was fighting an encroaching headache for all their efforts. Heaving a sigh after discarding another journal of seance notes, he got up to go find Dean.

The last thing he expected was to find his brother going through Pamela's fridge.

"Dude, what are you doing?" he asked from the kitchen entryway, crossing his arms over his chest.

Glancing back briefly, Dean stood, a clear glass bottle filled with some pink, fuzzy liquid in his hand. "Research is thirsty work, Sammy," he said offhand, scrutinizing the unlabeled bottle. "I'm sure she wouldn't mind if I ganked some strawberry soda, or whatever this is, before getting back to it."

"Are you serious?" Sam scoffed. "It's bad enough we're--" But he cut himself off as Dean pried the cap off the bottle and raised it to his lips. "Dean, stop. You don't know what that is!"

Too late to heed Sam's warning, Dean set to guzzling the drink eagerly. Sam could only gape at him as the bottle was half-emptied.

Lowering the bottle at last, Dean smiled and licked his lips. "Damn, that's good stuff!" he grinned. "It is strawberry soda, dude. Here, try some," he urged, holding the bottle out to Sam.

Sam raised an eyebrow, waiting to see if Dean was suddenly somehow affected by the unknown drink. After a too-long moment during which Dean only glared at him impatiently, he had to admit that maybe it really was just soda. The label could have fallen off, after all.

Finally taking the bottle from Dean, Sam upended it, gulping it down faster than he'd planned, shocked at the rapturous sweetness of the drink. Damn, but this stuff was great! He almost couldn't believe he hadn't trusted it.

But then the bottle was empty, and Sam gave it an odd look, holding it up between himself and his brother. "Guess I was... thirstier... than I thought," he said quietly, watching the way the light from the kitchen window refracted through the glass, warping reality on the other side. "Hmmm...."

"Sam," Dean said, his voice suddenly roughened.

Lowering the bottle, Sam caught his brother's suddenly intense look, and something flipped in the pit of his stomach, an unexpected heat curling low in his belly.

When had Dean become so beautiful?

He shook his head briefly, setting the bottle on the counter, but Dean's dark, lustful look didn't change in the slightest, his beauty didn't change.

Unable to stop himself, Sam husked back, "Dean, c'mere," and grabbed his brother by the lapels of his shirt, tugging him close and meeting him with a heated kiss.

He wasn't sure why none of this surprised him, and he couldn't quite remember why they were here in the first place, but he was too lost in Dean to care.
