Fic: Progenitors (DCU - Diana, Bruce) 1/1

Sep 30, 2007 00:42

Plot bunny attack! O_O It's been bugging me for weeks that in the DCU it seems no one's noticed that Donna Troy and Jason Todd have just disappeared, so when wonderwomanlove appeared today and demanded WW fic, this plot bunny nibbled on my ankles. :p Also fits trascendenza's Vocabulary Soup Challenge. Prompt #8: Progenitor. Hope you like!

Title: Progenitors
Author: Saavikam
Characters: Diana, Bruce
Rating: PG
Word Count: 536
Summary: Diana just can't find her sister.
Disclaimer: DC and WB own it all. I own nothing. Darnit.
Author's Note: Will be cross posted to both wonderwomanlove and batfic. Forgive me if I'm stepping on canon here; I haven't been able to get my weekly dose of comics for 2 weeks now. O_o Not sure if this plot bunny wants to go anywhere else yet, either, so this is a one-shot for now. Also, my first time writing Diana, and I'm dead tired, so I have no clue if my characterization is even close. Feedback welcome!! Please let me know if I've screwed up! :p

Progenitors

Diana touched down on the balcony hard, mentally exhausted from days of searching. No, not days, it was well over a week now that she'd been looking for Donna, praying she'd find her younger sister well away from the fallout from the disaster in Washington, hale and sound. Well over a week that she'd come up empty.

As far as she could tell, Donna Troy was nowhere on Earth.

Neither was a certain young man she'd apparently defended against his own brothers mere days before their disappearance.

It was for this reason that she'd finally given in and come here in the dark of the early, early morning. Even if Bruce knew nothing of their whereabouts, he at least had a vested interest in their disappearance. No matter that he and Jason were officially estranged.

Jason was still his son.

The balcony doors flew open almost immediately, Bruce appearing in a black silk robe, his brow furrowed at her sudden appearance at the Manor. “Diana? What is it? What's wrong?” he pressed, instant concern written onto his face.

“I can't find her, Bruce. I've looked everywhere. She's gone.” Diana wasn't sure she was keeping as calm as she needed to, based on Bruce's widening eyes.

“Whoa, take a breath,” he said, coming to her and gently laying a hand on her bare shoulder. “Donna's a big girl. She can handle herself, wherever she is.”

Diana twisted out from his touch, frustration blossoming into anger at the same speech she'd heard from every other Leaguer over the last few days. “I know that,” she spat. “But she's completely disappeared. As if she vanished. And that's not all.” She paused briefly, trying to guage how Bruce would react. “Jason's disappeared as well. No one has seen or heard from him since the day the Titans questioned him in New York over Duela's murder.”

For a moment, it looked as if Bruce had turned to stone, as still as he'd gone, his eyes dark and cold.

Finally, he turned away from her and stepped to the edge of the balcony to lean with his palms against the marble balustrade. “Jason can take care of himself, too.”

Having expected some version of that response, Diana shook her head, coming up behind him and placing a hand on his shoulder in turn, “Bruce... of course he can, but consider the coincidence of their disappearance! Something is not right, I can feel it.”

But Bruce made no move, seemingly indifferent to the situation. Stubborn Bat.

“It's up to us to find them. You know that. We're their progenitors! That makes them our responsibility,” she insisted, forcibly turning him back to face her.

For a second, she thought she saw a spark of caring flicker through his icy eyes.

“We have to find them.”

He dipped his head away from her glare then, and hope sprung up in her that she'd reached him. It wasn't often that he couldn't face her, but it always, always signaled his defeat.

“Fine,” he said at last, still not looking at her, his voice low, almost a growl of irritation.

At that, Diana let out a heavy breath in utter relief. “Good. Let's get going, then.”
