Summary: With Gotham going to hell in a hand basket, Jason and Tim are working tirelessly to get fix the damage that's occurred since Bruce's disappearance. After a hard patrol leaves them utterly exhausted, Tim has some interesting revelations on their way to the showers. Pre-slash in this part.
Disclaimer: DC and WB owns it all. I own nothing. Darnit.
Author's Notes: Let's just pretend that Battle for the Cowl ends with Jason as Batman, and Tim and Dick more than happy with that arrangement. Not that I have any idea what's gonna happen. :p
Come Undone - Part 1
Four thirty in the morning has come and gone by the time Jason and Tim get back to the Cave for the night, after a patrol that seemed, to Tim at least, practically endless, coming on the heels of a twelve-day patrol binge without a real break, no thanks to the hell Gotham has sunk further into. Scrubbing the exhaustion from his face after peeling off his red domino, Tim makes his way to the showers almost mechanically, just wanting to wash away the grime of the night's activities and head up to bed to at least try to catch up on some sleep. He's too tired to think about anything else at this point, and he's sure Jason can handle the post-patrol report by himself, anyway.
He's still stripping off his costume in the locker room next to the showers when Jason trudges in behind him, though.
"Nightly report still needs to be done," Tim starts automatically. If it comes out a bit harsh, he doesn't particularly care right now. This is what Jason signed on for, after all.
"Shower first," Jay grunts back, his voice like sandpaper after the long night and a few dozen interrogations.
At that, Tim gives up and guesses he can't really blame him, though, as tired as Jay sounds, too. Glancing over as he finishes with all the catches on his tunic and pulls it off, he realizes Jason is just standing there, leaning against the lockers with his palms flat against the doors. The former Robin hasn't made a move to undress yet, his cowl still firmly in place.
"Jason?" The question is tentative, as Tim doesn't really have the energy for more.
Jay doesn't move. "What?" he spits halfheartedly.
The curt response, much less than Jay's usual nightly verbal sparring, stirs something within Tim awake. The longer he stares at his brother, the more he sees Bruce, and that scares him. The whole arrangement was agreed upon as a way to keep them all from becoming the Big, Bad Bat, and Jason was supposed to be just crazy enough to not let the Mission drag him down like it did Bruce.
"If you want to get a shower, you need to take off the suit," he finally says, at a loss for any other response.
Jason heaves a hard sigh. "Tired."
The statement actually gets Tim to move. Jay won't be any good to anyone if he just leans there for the rest of the night.
"Stand up," he says, grasping Jay by the shoulder.
With another grunt, Jason obliges, turning slightly to face Tim. Though the lenses of the cowl hide his eyes, Tim can tell they must be practically drooping with exhaustion for Jay to let him touch him without the pretense of a fight or a training session.
The catches on the cowl and cape are easy enough to disarm and undo, then, and Tim slowly pulls the cowl up and off. Jason squints at the sudden harsh light of the locker room and blinks heavily, forcing a breath through his nostrils. His hair is matted down with sweat and grime.
Discarding the cape and cowl, Tim grabs Jason by the shoulders again to steady him as he starts to sway to the side. "C'mon, Jay, work with me," he says more gently, as the entire situation seems suddenly alarming. He's never seen Jason so completely out of it after a patrol, despite them only working together like this for a month now. Maybe the last two weeks are just catching up to them, but even so, he didn't think it was this bad.
Jason only drops his head onto Tim's shoulder, making weak attempts to get his own tunic off.
Startled by the sudden close contact, Tim stiffens, before gathering himself up and helping with the tunic. It's an awkward dance as they manage to get the rest of the suit off and Tim finally strips off the rest of his own uniform, but finally the two men stand naked in the locker room, Jason half-asleep and Tim propping him up.
"All right, Jay, let's get cleaned up," Tim prompts him, getting him to step into the large shower stall. With his older brother still clinging to him as he turns on the jets and maneuvers him beneath the spray, he realizes that their working relationship is going to be far, far different than his and Bruce's ever was.
