Author's Notes: You know how it is when a prompt grabs you and demands that you write fic for it *right the heck now*? Yeah. It's like that. Now if I could just get the rest of my projects and plot bunnies to cooperate like this... :p ETA: (7-8-08) Also written for

2008 DCU Fic/Art Endless Summer Challenge Strewn Diamonds and Endless Blue
Soaking in the warmth of the early summer sun, Princess Diana lies stretched out across the white sands of the sloping beach, her silken chiton spread out beneath her, rucked up over her long legs, and pushed down to expose her strong shoulders to gleaming rays. It's a beautiful morning on Themyscira, as usual, but there's something sweet about the air, promise and potential clinging like the dewy humidity to Diana's lightly tanned skin.
Eyes closed to the brightness overhead, she listens to the sounds of the island, exotic birds calling in chirrups, chitters, and whistles, the breeze rustling broad palms, the ocean lapping at the sand, her sisters going about their day, some sparring, some enjoying themselves further up the beach, light laughter floating on the air. It's music of the best kind - the easy balance of a people at one with their home. But again, something is different, and Diana can't quite put her finger on it.
With the wash of the ocean rushing up the beach growing louder in her ears as the tide slides slowly up the sand, the Princess pushes up on her elbows to peer out over the glittering blue and judge the remaining time before she has to abandon her spot for higher ground. Not long, as it turns out, but her eyes fix on the expanse of the sea, spread out before her as countless diamonds strewn over an endless field of water and sky, caressing the pristine sand in a meeting of the Goddesses of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Her heart swells at the beauty of the ocean surrounding their little paradise, reaching to the horizon and beyond. No sight has ever compared to this.
When cool water begins to lap at her toes, the trance is broken, and Diana shakes herself free of the hold of the ocean. Time to move.
Standing, she stretches her arms above her head, then brushes off what little sand managed to adhere itself to her chiton, shaking her long hair out as well. Another morning, another hour spent in the golden rays of the sun as they warm the island. Feeling content, if somewhat restless, Diana begins the trek back up the beach toward her sisters, wondering at the tingling in her skin that she can't seem to shake off as easily as the sand.
The thought is pushed aside as a new sound reaches her. Something high pitched, an insistent buzzing, the panicked scream of some animal unknown to the island. The tingling of her skin traces up her spine to raise the hair at the nape of her neck, and she turns toward the sound, gazing out over the sea, knowing her sisters are doing the same, a hundred eyes and ears held in rapt attention, waiting, anxious.
In the distance, a sleek shape grows, silver wings shining with the sun over the glittering of strewn diamonds and endless blue, smoke trailing behind.
And Diana knows. Change is coming to Themyscira.
