I've read a lot of comments elsewhere about how that story was out of place, or whitewashing, or Dean forgot all the stuff he resented John for, etc., etc. Also how Dean's reaction at the time was OOC (Dean never would have told John, "I hate you" to his face).
I didn't find the story out of place at all, and given that Dean was drugged and drunk at the time, I can easily see him stepping out of line with the sass.
I don't think Dean has forgotten anything John laid on him. I think Dean has come to a point where he can accept the dichotomy that was John Winchester. Not perfect, not evil, certainly flawed, but himself dealt a crummy hand, and he played it as best he could.
