I accomplished one of the goals I set for myself this summer. I have always wanted to read "To Kill a Mockingbird". The sad part is the book has been sitting on my bookshelf for years and I never bothered to pull it out. Both of my oldest kids had to read it in seventh grade, you would think that would tell you how long it has been here.
In any case. I read. I loved. Now I know what the hooplah is all about.
TKAM is an amazing coming of age book. Well, it is more than that, of course. There is innocence and love and it speaks to the human condition in a way that I have not seen in a while.
But now I know. All about Atticus, Scout, Jem and Boo Radley.
Fanfic has given me a lot of information about these people. Wonderful fic like Mockingbird
hiyacynth.livejournal.com/218645.html slammed it home years ago. I just recently listened to that on podfic too. Awesome fic, if ya'll want some good het, including an unforgettable Sam swimming. *fans self* Of course that is just one of the many times I have heard about TKAM in fanfic, but that is the one that stands out in my frame of reference.
I have always wanted to watch the movie, but have never been able to 'cause I have a personal belief that the book is always better. So I always have to read the book for anything first. So, the next thing on my agenda, to watch To Kill A Mockingbird.
If anyone else has any amazing books to share with - let me know. They can be classics or newer stuff, I don't much care about that. They can be light and summery or they can have a bite to them. Good fiction is good fiction you know?
I have not been able to read just for fun, excepting fanfic, in well over a year. And I love fanfic, I do, but there is something intrinsically comforting about a book, either hardback or paperback, that a computer just doesn't do for me. Which is one of the reasons I have not jumped on the kindle bandwagon. I am such a reading geek, I even love the smell of books.
Anyhow, if you haven't read To Kill A Mockingbird. Do it. If you have not read it since middle school, read it again. It is worth the revisit.
