Ruki’s POV

~~~
Was I stupid for thinking that everything would be perfect?
That once I got him to agree to being with me, we’d have it too?
What Uruha and Aoi had?
We’d been together for over a month, but we still weren’t there.
Yes, things were different.
We spent a lot more time together.
Which is really saying something.
Considering how much time we’d spent with each other before.
And Reita’s attitude had changed.
He was sweet.
Thoughtful and considerate.
The perfect boyfriend.
Almost.
Because sometimes he was also a clueless idiot.
Like now.
He and Uruha were playing some stupid video game.
When I wanted him to pay attention to me.
I sighed, standing up.
I don’t even think he noticed when I left the room.
Why had Kai agreed to put that blasted system in our practice room anyway?
I slowly walked around the hallways.
Surprised when I came around the corner and bumped into Miyavi.
“Hey!” he squealed, grabbing me in a hug.
“I hear things are going well with you and Rei.”
“Who told you that?” I asked, even more surprised.
“Please. I have my sources. But why are you out here alone?”
“The two idiots are playing the latest-greatest video game.  Or so they say.”
“Ah. The idiots in question being yours and Aoi’s?”
“What other idiots do you know?”
He rolled his eyes.
“Can I ask you something?”
He nodded.
“How does one progress from being friends to being boyfriends?”
“You’re kidding, right? I thought you’d already figured that one out.”
“Not exactly,” I muttered, continuing my walk.
“What’s the problem?”
“We’re close.  But not as close as I think we can be.”
“Did you tell him how you feel?”
I nodded, looking at the floor.
“You said ‘I love you’ to him?” Miyavi pushed.
“Well, no. Not exactly.”
He threw his hands up in the air.
Stopping, he grabbed me by the shoulders.
“You write lyrics. How can you not know the importance of words?”
“What’s the difference if I show him instead?”
“Oh man.  There’s a huge difference. Sometimes your meaning isn’t what the other person gets.”
He started walking again.
“So, you’re saying I have to tell him that I love him.”
“That depends.  Things can keep going the way they are. But you want things to change. Right?”
I nod again.
“Then yes. You have to sit down with him and tell him exactly how you feel. Whatever words you like best.  Just make sure that you include ‘I love you’ in there somewhere.”
He stopped again.
“Don’t take too long, tho. It’ll make things worse.”
“Worse? How?”
“Well, the longer you wait the more comfortable you’ll both get with the way things already are.  He also might think you’re just playing games with him. So you take the chance of losing him.”
I stared at him.
“Listen” he said grabbing my shoulders again. “You need to say the words.  He needs to hear them.  How else do you expect things to change? You have to make them change. Or do you expect him to say it first?”
I stared after him as he walked away.
Maybe I was expecting Rei to confess first.
But that was stupid.
Miyavi was right.
I had to tell him.
I turned around.
Making my way back to the practice room.
Wondering how I was going to go about this one.
How the hell was I going to tell my best friend that I’d fallen in love with him?
That I wanted us to be more than just the lovers we were playing at being now.
That I couldn’t imagine my life without him in it.
I stopped inside the door.
They’d obviously finished with their game.
Because Rei wasn’t there.
“What’s going on?” I asked the room in general.
“Rei went looking for you.  I guess you guys must’ve taken different routes.”
“Oh.”
I sat down, a little dejected.
I wasn’t planning on telling him in front of the others, but I still wanted to see him.
Now that I’d finally made the decision.
A few minutes later, Rei returned.
He didn’t look too happy.
“Hey, what’s up?” I asked, walking over to him.
“Nothing much.  Where’d you go anyway?”
“Just for a walk. I ran into Miyavi.  He say’s ‘Hi’, by the way,” I told the others.
Rei nodded, taking his place as we all got back to practice.
There was something bothering him.
I was sure of it.
He didn’t smile once during the rest of practice.
While everyone was putting their stuff away, I approached him.
“So, what are we doing tonight?”
He shrugged.
“Whatever.  Makes no difference to me.”
“Watch TV at my place?” I offer.
“Sure” he says.
Finished loading up his stuff, he heads for the door.
This isn’t good.
I remember what Miyavi said.
About playing games.
And loosing him.
God, am I already too late?
